Popcorn machine removed from N.D. Capitol after triggering fire alarms twice

A lawmaker's popcorn machine was removed from the North Dakota Capitol after it set off fire alarms twice in one day, officials said.

The Capitol's legislative wing was evacuated twice Monday, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, after fire alarms were triggered by a popcorn machine brought in by Rep. Mary Johnson, R-Fargo.

Facility Management Director John Boyle said the Bismark Fire Department responded to both calls.

Johnson said she had been unaware of a 32-year-old policy from the Office of Management and Policy that bans popcorn machines and other cooking devices from being used outside of the Capitol Cafe. The policy was designed to prevent fire alarms from being triggered, Boyle said.

House Majority Leader Chet Pollert, R-Carrington, said the popcorn machine was meant to be a treat for House Republicans. He told the Bismark Tribune the caucus had been "a little strained" due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent expulsion of former representative Luke Simons, R-Dickinson, who was accused of workplace and sexual harassment.

"Popcorn cheers people up for a reason," Pollert said. "And now it's gone, and that's the way it goes."

All those detectors are located AWAY from cooking appliances for a reason. So Ms. Fargo brings in a portable cooking appliances and dollars to donuts parks it within 10ft of a detector.

The results were entirely predictable.

Contact Facilities Management for approval BEFORE making changes.

No more popcorn, eh ? Do what they do in D.C.: Have sex with your staffers. That’ll cheer them right up.

Mary Johnson FROM Fargo. An interesting little tidbit about the North Dakota capitol building is that it was built as a functional office building during the 1930s for a bargain price.

It is one of the plainest looking capital buildings in America. North Dakotans like it that way. The legislature is limited to a 90 day session every two years by law unless the governor calls a special session for an emergency.

When I lived there, the governor still answered his own phone. At one time or another, I met every governor during the 22 years I lived in the state. It is that easy . . . or at east it was.

They probably didn’t get the TruCoat. That TruCoat, you don’t get it and you get oxidization problems.

"North Dakota has a state representative named Mary Fargo?!?"

"Are you implying there's been some malfeasance?"

“Office of Management and Policy that bans popcorn machines and other cooking devices from being used outside of the Capitol Cafe.”

Any bets as to how many microwave ovens or coffee makers are tucked away in offices? The popcorn machine definitely blows the lid off the policy, for sure.

Um, no.

“Smoke detectors” are designed to be sensitive for a reason and do NOT detect visible smoke, but combustion byproducts via ionization of particles in the air from their radioactive source. The detector could easily have been 30-50 feet away and still triggered due to reaction of the popper’s hot plate and the fat therein.

The Rep’s staff should have known better. Rep, too. Anyone who cooks certainly knows better.

Their ignorance is only matched by the designer who placed such a detector in my kitchen 8 feet from the stove - and the regulator who mandated it.

The unwritten story here is that the Republican rep likely installed the popper to torture the dems; that makes me SMILE.
