The FBI, just like any law enforcement, shouldn’t theoretically be in the business of worrying about political sensitivities, but yet they are.

First off, you don’t want to look like you are targeting a member of a minority religion.

Secondly, the accepting of refugees from Syria was a very charged issue at the time. There were a lot of people complaining that we needed a good way to vet any incoming refugees or we will regret it. The FBI shouldn’t be worried about I-Told-You-Sos, but they are.

Also, even if you set those aside, you have a dilemma with civil liberties, which I suspect most of us would agree should still be protected. I have no problem with the FBI (and others) investigating threats. In fact, I think they should. But you can’t expect them to go around snatching people of the street before they commit any crimes. We don’t have three precogs in the temple calling out redballs.

The FBI at one time shared information with local police. Many crimes were stopped in the planning stages when would be criminals got a knock on the door and just a hello, we know who you are ,from the cops. Great proven crime stopper was keeping criminals a bit paranoid.
