Letlow Wins Louisiana Special House Election for Late Husband’s Seat

Letlow received 65 percent of the vote, according to the Louisiana Department of State. Democrat Sandra Christophe received 27 percent of the vote. The race featured nine other Republicans, including one who drew 5 percent of the vote.

“This is an incredible moment and it is truly hard to put into words,” Letlow said in a statement. “What was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband, Luke, has become my mission in his honor to carry the torch and serve the good people of Louisiana’s 5th District.”

“I am humbled that you would entrust me with the honor of your vote and the privilege to serve you in Congress. A simple thank you doesn’t fully encapsulate the depth of my gratitude.”

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Letlow on March 10 and boosted her again during the election on Saturday.

“Julia Letlow is outstanding and so necessary to help save our Second Amendment, at the Border, and for our Military and Vets. Louisiana, get out and vote today—she will never disappoint!” the former president said in a statement on Saturday.

Luke Letlow died in December 2020—just days before he was to be sworn into office—from a heart attack that was “likely related to thromboembolic phenomena caused by COVID-19,” the doctor in charge of the hospital where he was being treated confirmed in an email. He was 41 years old.

Louisiana hosted another special congressional election on Saturday in a safe Democratic seat that former Rep. Cedric Richmond vacated to join the Biden administration. The top two finishers were both Democrats — state Sens. Troy Carter and Karen Carter Peterson — and will meet in a runoff on April 24.

New Mexico, Ohio and Texas will also host specials this year to fill seats held by the new Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge and the late Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas), who died of Covid. Wright’s widow, Susan Wright, is running for his seat, along with more than 20 other candidates.

It actually was a 12 person field, only one democrat and she raised $680K to he next highest of $70K.

This was the third election for the family in 2020/2021. Luke had beaten a filed of 9 in November but did not gt the required 50%. His opponent was a Republican Lance Harris who had gotten 16% to his 333% of the 300,000 votes.

Luke won the runoff election 62% to 38% on December 5, 2020 with 79,000 votes cast. He past away on Decmeber 29, 2020 at age 41, ten days after he revealed he had tested positive.
