As the new president of The University of Texas at Austin, I know that our great institution can live up to its highest ideals only by creating a space where open discourse, discovery and debate can flourish.
I also know that during these challenging and divisive times, the notion of “free speech” has become somewhat controversial and politicized. This is a mistake. The freedom to speak and debate is not only outlined in the First Amendment of the Constitution — it is at the heart of the scientific method and all of the scholarship, creative work and research that defines a world-class university.

“As the new president of The University of Texas at Austin....” yeah, he’ll quickly change his tune or be looking for a new job.

I wish him luck if he’s serious. We need to put a stop to this attack on freedom and I hope people will support him......it has to start somewhere!
“Believe what I say and not what you see.”
Well, that won’t be well received by the Campus Woke Nazis. Sexual harassment and/or assault allegations likely incoming for the new president, sooner rather than later. That’s just how it’s done today.
He won’t last a month.
Free for the left only.
We should encourage anyone who pushes back against censorship and intimidation. How many people in his situation hear nothing or maybe only skepticism (no encouragement l from the right while they hear nothing but angry howls from the left?
The Texas legislature could lead the way in enforcing free speech at state universities by passing legislation that the university is REQUIRED to expel any student from the university found to be blocking or interfering with speech of an authorized speaker and such student will not be allowed to apply to any other state university. Other red states will follow.
And that’s just how Do Presidents de Universitad Austin likes it.
“I also know that during these challenging and divisive times, the notion of “free speech” has become somewhat controversial and politicized”
A shameful thing to say without a FORCEFUL statement that it is an evil idea to suppress speech and that it must cease or he will act against it.
He should have said if you take away people’s free speech, they have a right to second amendment solutions to make their argument.
And quote several of the founders on free speech. It’s one of the few things they all agreed 100% on.
Decades of incremental leftism and then they wake up and wonder WTF happened
Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems conservatives face on campus today is acquiring the permission of the campus governing authority - either the administration and/or student governing body - to speak in the first place.
They’re not even getting the opportunity to be shouted down anymore. They’re simply not allowed to show up.
“Freedom of speech is the path, not the problem.”
Not sure this guy is serious; I hope he is.
If he can eke out a victory in Texas, maybe another valiant fighter will attempt it elsewhere. And then another.
This is what we have been training for.
He's right! I hope he thrives in his new position. Good for him!
How could any conservative take a negative view of this?
Whoa, where’d this dude come from? How new is he? This is my alma mater. I wrote them off a couple of years ago as hopelessly woke and bigoted when they rolled out some diversity and inclusion program that was right out of 1984. Perhaps the “board” noted that alumni were telling them to bugger off.

Like Trump, he talks alright, but is practically powerless to put the brakes on anything like diversity and inclusion programs.
Whoever engages the legislature is closer to change.
Add any employee who engages in the suppression of speech will be immediately fired.
