AstraZeneca to seek U.S. authorization for COVID-19 vaccine this month or early next

AstraZeneca Plc AZN.L is preparing to file for U.S. emergency use authorization (EUA) for its COVID-19 vaccine later this month or early April after accumulating enough data to judge the inoculation's efficacy, sources with knowledge of the ongoing clinical trial told Reuters on Friday (12 Mar).

AstraZeneca said in February it expects its vaccine could receive U.S. emergency use authorization at the beginning of April and could immediately deliver 30 million doses to locations around the United States.

This could be a big surge in vaccine supply in April.

AstraZeneca has been widely used in the UK, EU, Australia, India, Canada and Mexico for some time already. There was a recent hold in the EU to investigate potential blood clot side effects, but that issue may be resolved with the results of the American Phase III Trial.

Looks like Novavax is slipping into May, for its expected Emergency Use Authorization.

There something like 12 nations in Europe who have stopped the AstraZeneca rollout due to concerns of vaccine injury.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the AstraZenecca vaccine has been cleared by the EU.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/astrazenecas-covid-19-vaccine-is-cleared-by-europe-after-blood-clot-concerns-11616083845?mod=hp_lead_pos1

Article behind paywall. Some limited excerpts:

“The European Union’s health agency said that the Covid-19 vaccine produced by AstraZeneca PLC was “safe and effective” and didn’t increase the risk of blood clots, a decision that could clear the way for the resumption of inoculation campaigns that have been halted in much of the region.”

“The European Medicines Agency said that new expert analysis concluded that the benefits of using a Covid-19 vaccine produced by AstraZeneca outweigh its potential risks and inoculations with it should proceed.”

Wife and I received our second Pfizer dose this AM. So far, nothing has fallen off or no new extremities.

“‘It’s a very special picture.’ Why vaccine safety experts put the brakes on AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine”

“The decision this week by more than 20 European countries to temporarily stop using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine has opened a rift between vaccine safety experts, who say the cases of serious clotting and bleeding that triggered the pause are alarming and unusual, and public health officials concerned that the immunization pause on a continent in the grip of the pandemic’s third wave could take a heavy toll.”

One Freeper reported a second penis grew on his forehead. That may have been the Moderna, or it might just be that he was drinking again.

To many people experiencing blood clots so many European nations have 'paused' the AstraZeneca vaccine administration.

Great. Monkey virus.

And you still can't specify which vaccine you want, so now the roulette wheel includes monkey virus.

Sheesh.

“Wife and I received our second Pfizer dose this AM. So far, nothing has fallen off or no new extremities.”

Wife has had her 2 doses of Moderna with little reaction... I’m scheduled for my 2nd dose of Pfizer in 10 days. Had a very slight tenderness at injection site from 1st.

Guess we’re the exceptions from all the horror stories floating around.

“ No drug is side-effect free.”

And the most destructive and addictive drug on the entire planet?

Excessive Government over-reach.

I’d be surprised if the risk-averse FDA actually authorized the AZ/Oxford vaccine any time soon. The clinical trials they conducted had numerous problems in protocols and there’s at least a question (probably nothing, but the question begs to be answered) about the blood clotting reports. WHO says the rates of clotting issues are no different between recipients of the AZ/Oxford vaccine and the general population, but I can easily see the FDA refusing to move forward until all investigations have completed.

There’s really no rush at this point, given how quickly the other vaccines - which no linger questions on safety or efficacy - are working. There’s also the issue of the AZ/Oxford vaccine being largely ineffective with the South Africa variant. I’ve seen one study claim it works with the Brazil variant, but I’d be curious to see those results replicated.

If it doesn’t work with all variants, it doesn’t have a lot of value.

Age-dependent immune response to the Biontech/Pfizer BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccination

https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.03.03.21251066v1

“While the majority of participants in both groups produced specific IgG antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, titers were significantly lower in elderly participants. Although the increment of antibody levels after the second immunization was higher in elderly participants, the absolute mean titer of this group remained lower than the <60 group. After the second vaccination, 31.3 % of the elderly had no detectable neutralizing antibodies in contrast to the younger group, in which only 2.2% had no detectable neutralizing antibodies.”

The UK trial had issues (dosing error), but they US trial seems to have been problem free. If they hadn't screwed up in the UK, it probably would have been approved more quickly in the US, but it still looks on track to be approved in next month, 5 months after it was approved in the UK.

Two issues with A-Z:

1) It is the “dirtiest” of the four in terms of stem cells from aborted babies...not that any of the four are “pure”.

2) Several nations have ceased using it because of blood clot concerns.

Lots of folks want there to be ‘horror stories’.

I’ve lost 80 pounds in the last year. My face was so wrinkled from the weight loss my wife insisted that I get a face lift. She claimed I was making her look old. I had the face lift about 10 days prior to my first shot. I spent 8 hours on the operating table. I was still recovering from the face lift when I had the first shot. I wasn’t feeling all that great after the first shot but I’m reluctant to attribute any symptoms following my first shot to the vaccine. I was tired, achy, and cold, all could have been either the lift or the vaccine.
