A district court in Japan has in a landmark decision ruled that the country's failure to recognise same-sex marriage is "unconstitutional".
Japan's constitution defines marriage as one between "both sexes".
But a Sapporo court ruled that this denied the couples constitutionally-guaranteed equality, in what is seen as a symbolic victory for LGBTQ activists.
Japan is the only country in the G7 group of developed nations that does not allow same-sex marriage.
The case was one of several brought to district courts in various parts of Japan by a group of same-sex couples who are seeking damages for mental suffering.
The court in Sapporo in northern Japan is the first to give its verdict, and its ruling is seen as having significant impact on the other courts. It however rejected the compensation claim.
However, there is still some way to go.
Even if all district courts declare same-sex unions constitutional, the legalisation of same-sex marriages is not guaranteed. But many still consider the move a win for marriage equality.

Apparently they have activist district court judges too.
Does Japan really need drag queens parading around, considering the threat from China is growing stronger by the day?

Up until my retirement 12 years ago, I did business in Japan for the previous 25 years.
The manners and social graces were so wonderful. The people are warm and have a, at times, silly sense of humor that really was a hit with me.
I used to call Japan my second home. As America started to decay, I would scoot back to Japan for sanity.
Seeing changes like this court ruling and others I’ve followed now make me say you indeed can never go home again.
It’s a shame.
One of the few decent major nations left. Zero immigration has retained their culture. But now traitors from within threaten it. FIGHT!
Do they have a review court?
It sounds like Japan needs to bring out the Zero’s.
Japan was already done. Now it is more done.
I would not lift a finger if China takes some disputed islands.
Whatever would people do without judges to decide all the issues for them? The arrogance of the judiciary is international.
Nice to see other countries are just like the U.S. It doesn't matter if the constitution or law explicitly states one thing, it only matters what a judge says it says.
The whole propaganda effect is captured in the word “landmark”. You are to be swept up in the “momentum” of something that “cannot be stopped.”
Someone once said if you want to destroy a country, introduce political correctness.
So, the constitution is unconstitutional?
No guns allowed in Japan. They do, however, have very, very sharp knives! I expect to hear about gut piles showing up in the near future. The Japanese are DEADLY serious about their national integrity and traditons.
