The Biden administration has staunchly denied categorizing the rush of unaccompanied migrant children at the border a crisis, but it is now deploying the Federal Emergency Management Agency to the border to address it.

The vast majority of FEMA Disaster Assistance Employees are not part of any Union. They are reservists and are called up as needed for disaster work. They receive no vacation or retirement benefits nor can they join any government health care network. They are paid on an hourly basis with a per diem if they need to travel. Generally when notified of their activation they need to be at or on the way to their duty stations within 24-48 hours. It is not the easiest job and sometimes was referred to as “home wrecker” duty because the heavy travel and long deployments destroyed so many marriages. That is one of the reasons you see either very young single people as reservists or older retired military/police. It is definitely not for everyone.
