Every generation seems to come up with new euphemisms for one of the oldest forms of gender-based oppression and the terms this generation seems to have adopted are “sugar babies” and “sugar daddies,” as if these very quaint terms can undo the reality of prostitution, buying sex.
Prostitution consists of two very unequal halves. One half is selling sex; predominantly women and girls who usually are in some way lacking basic necessities in their lives, have dependants, or struggle with mental health or addictions. The other half is the men (over 90% of those who buy sex are men) who use their social power and money to demand sexual subordination of those vulnerable girls and women by exploiting their financial situations. Men’s actions, and narcissistic sexual desires, are protected by the structure of patriarchy.
The narrative happening today with sugar babies declaring “I’m choosing it” and “I’m empowered by it” are the same arguments that many of my friends and I parroted back when we were called “hos.” There are arguments for both sides of prostitution and the sex industry has been working fastidiously to sanitize itself in order to entice new players. With that said, cracks in the façade are beginning to show. Just recently, Pornhub’s parent company, MindGeek, had to testify before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics for hosting rape, child abuse, and trafficking content on their website.
If prostitution, or any part of the sex industry, is such a benign activity then why is human trafficking so rampant? Why do we have hotlines and ads warning individuals about this exploitation? Why do women and girls’ lives seem so chewed up when they leave? Why don’t we discuss the after-effects of the sex industry? Are women becoming millionaires?

I was going to suggest if you want to go down the rabbit hole, you read the tweets of Andrea Heinz, "Former Brothel Owner & Escort - 7 years in the Sex Trade. Feminist, Writer, Speaker, Abolitionist." Unfortunately as I was typing this, Ms. Heinz set her twitter account to "protected". Although she worked as a 'sex worker' and a brothel owner (exploiting women for money; human trafficer) she views all sex as rape.
That may be true of street walkers, but the Sugar Babies are not in it for necessities. They are in it for a luxury lifestyle. Condos, cars, shopping, jewelry, travel. Many are college students and young professionals who want luxury before they earn it through a career.
We had a president who was very energetic is stopping human trafficking — the media, and the feminists hated him.
We now have a guy in the White House whose son engages in human trafficking — the media, and the feminists think he’s awesome.
The issue is ever the issue. The issue is always the Revolution.
LOL, as someone who is about to loose about 300K to my soon to be ex-wife I ask who is exploiting who? First wife only cost me 100K.
One way or another they will make you pay.
Well, inflation, so there's that...
Is that your last one?
How many people even use that term, except on TV, or maybe sarcastically?
Do you actually know these people, or it just happens on TV?
A few years ago, the woman killed her “sugar daddy,” who was an executive at a company acquired by Google?
Hahaha when I was nine, I pulled a bloody tooth out with one of those to make room for a permanent tooth!
The answer is simple. Power.
Real rape happens every day. Far too often. Just like spousal abuse is far far to common.
But there are women and girls who make choices, completely under their own will power and volition, who regret it well after the fact. Almost always they didn’t get out of it what they wanted, or it started out how they wanted, then changed. They feel used. They feel like victims. Then, suddenly, all those years of being told that you are a victim class comes crashing down upon their brow, and they feel beaten. Then it’s date rape, or domestic abuse, and when these happen, they diminish the genuine claims of true victims, of those who were truly powerless to stop what happened to them.
Ouch! My sincere condolences.
If a woman moves in with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend pays the bulk of the bills, is that prostitution?
If a woman lives in a traditional marriage, with her being a housewife and her husband bringing in the income, is that prostitution?
Good questions.
My gut reaction would be that presumeably a live in significant other, or marriage, are based on love and mutual affection, etc. and not on him viewing her primarily as a sexual partner for his gratification. But maybe some men look at these relationships mainly as a means of having sex.
If he’s paying a majority or all of the household bills, and she sees her contribution as providing him female companionship whenever he’s “in the mood” for same, we could discuss what type of relationship they really have.
I remember reading an article about “sugar babies”, who were all college girls who needed financial aid.
I think part of this phenomenon, is the decline of morality. For example, those of us of a certain age, remember when it was widely considered immoral to have sex outside of marriage.
Nowadays, these young girls have grown up in a culture and society in which it is considered ok to have sex, any number of partners, any sex of partners. So these young girls doing these things don’t even stop to think that they are doing anything immoral. It never occurs to them. It’s beyond their frame of reference.
Men have always provided for women...why worry about it

About 6-9 months ago, there was a girl killed after flying to Utah making money this way and pretty sure she called it that. She had a site instructing how to make money this way. It used to be more formal and longer term relationships (6 months to a couple of years) but it seems like there had been a movement toward one weekend stands.

Yeah an immigrant killed her, chopped her up, burned and buried her remains. Maybe one of those refugees the former governor was so eager to import.
How does this qualify as “oppression”?
