White House National Security Council adviser Roberta Jacobson mistakenly told migrants that the Southern border was open, during the White House press briefing on Wednesday.
During the briefing, Jacobson switched from English to Spanish and said, “la frontera no esta cerrada” (the border IS NOT closed). After a White House aide handed her a slip of paper later in the briefing, Jacobson corrected her statement to say, “la frontera esta cerrada” (the border IS closed).
White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the mistake during the White House press briefing, as a reporter noted Jacobson’s comment could be picked up by Spanish-speaking migrants.
“Well, given she also said that the border is closed, we’re hopeful that that is what will be picked up. And that has clearly and consistently been our message,” Psaki said.
Jacobson acknowledged during the briefing the administration was struggling with the issue of “mixed messages” by trying to signal hope to potential migrants for a path into the country while also reminding them of the dangers of the journey.
“I will certainly agree we are trying to walk and chew gum at the same time,” she said.
On Tuesday, Psaki told reporters “we are not trying to close our borders” and said the priority was to “create an effective, moral, humane system.”

A modern day Günter Schabowski. That is the East German who misspoke and said the border to West Germany was open immediately causing people to flock to the border. Some left their table with dinner still on it. This time though they said what they mean.
Just for curiosity sake...this Roberta Johnson character...what level is her Spanish? Second-grade level? Sixth-grade level? 400-word level?
Also, because I’ve known a Honduran or two....if you tried to understand conversation between Mexican Spanish and Honduran Spanish...you’d need to slow the tape down and go sentence by sentence...the accent business is a bit different.
I’ve had people say that the same problem pops up with El Salvadorans and Guatemalans.
My first wife was born and raised in Peru. English was her second language. In our almost 20 years together I saw her speak to Spanish speakers from just about every country where it is spoken and she had about as many problems as a native born American would have speaking to someone from the UK or Australia.
Seems everything associated with the Biden Administration is rank amateur.

What exactly is the “mistake?” The border is nearly as open as Kamala Harris’ legs in Willie Brown’s office.

Her next 2 lines in Spanish were interpreted as “Biden is lucid”, and “Kamala worked her way to the top”.
That’s what happens when nonsense is ones first language...
