The slew of Senate Republican retirements prove who's in charge of the GOP now (CNN squeals!)

Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt's surprise retirement announcement Monday adds his name to a growing list of GOP establishment politicians who no longer recognize the party they represent and have decided to walk away rather than face the peril of losing their career at the hands of a Donald Trump-inspired base that views them a insufficiently loyal to the cause.

To date, five Republicans senators -- Blunt, Richard Shelby (Alabama), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and Rob Portman (Ohio) -- have all announced that they will not seek another term next November. It's not a coincidence that all five are considered remnants of the Republican Party of George W. Bush and have struggled to adjust to the new Trump-led GOP.

"The rash of GOP retirements, likely to avoid Trump madness in the primaries, shows you Trump still isn't done destroying the party," tweeted conservative commentator (and CNN contributor) Amanda Carpenter after Blunt's retirement announcement. "Onwards we go."

The trend is hard to dispute.

Blunt, prior to Monday morning, was not seen as someone even considering not running again. He had spent a lifetime in politics -- including a stint in House leadership -- and is a close ally of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky). And with the Republican trend in Missouri, Blunt's path in a general election in 2020 is probably clearer than in either of his past two Senate bids.

But Blunt isn't a Trumper. In the wake of the January 6 US Capitol riot, Blunt said that Trump had been "clearly reckless" although he insisted, wrongly in retrospect, that "the President touched the hot stove on Wednesday and is unlikely to touch it again."

We saw two House election cycles under Trump. Did we gain seats or lose them?

Well in 2018 we lost them. But with Paul Ryano as SOTH what would you expect? But in 2020 we gained seats and are within 5 or 6 of taking control.

Those in the Senate that are up for reelection in 2022 were elected last time in 2016 when Trump won office. Despite being Vichy Repugs they could ride out his term, but now they know the jig is up and they don’t have any America First cred to campaign on.

In these states, Republican conservatives are sure to win those seats.

Ditto for turncoat Toomey here in PA. Yet one more of many arguments for short term limits.

“All but a very few of the Republican members
of the House are anywhere near what we would consider a
Conservative.”

This appears to be very poor sentence construction. I believe you meant ONLY rather than ALL BUT.

Saw a billboard driving into Charlotte Saturday that read:

“Thank you Senator Burr for upholding the Constitution”

I figured The Lincoln Project must have wasted some dollars on that one..

Funny, I saw the same one for Toomey just south of Pittsburgh. I couldn’t figure that one out either.

Exactly so. You can’t make trouble if you’re not on the rolls.

Not entirely true; I dumped my 50 year Repuglicrat registration back in January and re-registered as an Independent.

I can still vote in primary and the general elections, and I get to tell the worthless STATE REPUGLICRAT COMMITTEE to piss up a rope.

There were a lot of retirees in 2018. RINOs.

At least they know what’s in store for them, unless they convince their friend rats voting base to elect them

I think that if you reread my post, you’ll note I was cautioning
others to rethink their rosy expectations, or at least contemplate
an ending not as good as they seem to think.

It was good of you to remind me we did gain seats in the House.

I agree with your take there.

Yes, I agree.

All but a few of the Republicans in the House are RINOs.

I believe the ratio I touched on with my original comment would
help clarify what was on my mind. I appreciate the mention.

I should mention that it’s my take that we still don’t have the
type of Conservative representation we need in the House.

That seems to be an almost universal belief right now.
