The slew of Senate Republican retirements prove who's in charge of the GOP now (CNN squeals!)

Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt's surprise retirement announcement Monday adds his name to a growing list of GOP establishment politicians who no longer recognize the party they represent and have decided to walk away rather than face the peril of losing their career at the hands of a Donald Trump-inspired base that views them a insufficiently loyal to the cause.

To date, five Republicans senators -- Blunt, Richard Shelby (Alabama), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and Rob Portman (Ohio) -- have all announced that they will not seek another term next November. It's not a coincidence that all five are considered remnants of the Republican Party of George W. Bush and have struggled to adjust to the new Trump-led GOP.

"The rash of GOP retirements, likely to avoid Trump madness in the primaries, shows you Trump still isn't done destroying the party," tweeted conservative commentator (and CNN contributor) Amanda Carpenter after Blunt's retirement announcement. "Onwards we go."

The trend is hard to dispute.

Blunt, prior to Monday morning, was not seen as someone even considering not running again. He had spent a lifetime in politics -- including a stint in House leadership -- and is a close ally of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky). And with the Republican trend in Missouri, Blunt's path in a general election in 2020 is probably clearer than in either of his past two Senate bids.

But Blunt isn't a Trumper. In the wake of the January 6 US Capitol riot, Blunt said that Trump had been "clearly reckless" although he insisted, wrongly in retrospect, that "the President touched the hot stove on Wednesday and is unlikely to touch it again."

All you Freepers who reside in these states and who dumped their Republican party membership should reconsider. Trump can't advance MAGA candidates without primary votes!!

The funny thing is, they forgot one very important fact on the
trek to review this dynamic.

What is that fact? All but a very few of the Republican members
of the House are anywhere near what we would consider a
Conservative.

In other words, if you’re a Republican retiring from the House,
there’s about an 85-90% vs 10-15% likelihood you are a retiring
RINO.

Now is this driven by an aversion to Trump? LOL, well I would
say most likely not. Most of them sat comfortably through Trump’s
term in office. That would have been when they were going to
step down, if they really didn’t like his agenda and tactics.

Consider also that the Democrats have the election scam factor
going strong. Tell me again what RINOs have to fear in the House
right now?

Well, not much.

We saw two House election cycles under Trump. Did we gain seats
or lose them?

Everyone who is certain we’re really going to clean up in 2022
and 2024, you might want to think about that.

You’ll be doing the same things that were done in 2018 and 2020.
How did that work out for us.

You’re points are well taken, but also consider:

- 50 republicans retired in 2018, most of them Boehner boys. They retired with the specific purpose of giving the Democrats the House (recall the glee in Brett Baer’s voice in announcing, while polls were still open mind you, that the Democrats had taken control).

- Republicans GAINED twelve seats in 2020

The people are watching. One bad vote, no Trump endorsement for you, and you’re out.

These establishment Republicans' days have come and gone.

If they can't recognize or don't like what Trump represents, then they best move on and clear the deck for fresh blood because the base of the GOP will not support them anymore.

At least Blunt sees the handwriting on the wall and is retiring.

There are some younger members, like Sasse or even Romney and others, who think they can still mount a comeback and get rid of Trump. They are in for a real surprise when they realize they don't have any supporters anymore.

Trump's America First is the new normal. It's no longer the GOPe party or the Swamp or the Deep State who will lead us into the future.

You know what they call someone who walks off of the line in the midst of a battle?

A retiring Republican.

That 12 seat jump was a good point.

Over the next couple of years, it will be interesting to see how
those twelve distinguish themselves.

Out of touch RINOS miscalculate again. They thought with Trump gone Republicans were going to “come home” so to speak. Not realizing that we are never going back. The only thing left for the turtle is his shell. He is alienated and marginalized from both the left and the right. He needs to step down. He leaves a legacy of a wasted majority and a powerless minority. A failed and disgraced party leader.

The people who wrote this live in some kind of a little bubble world, where the intent of 80 million people was thrown into the trash by criminal Democrat and Republican scumbags, and they act as if this is some kind of surprise.

What can we expect, when our party has been thoroughly infiltrated by the swampies, too?

This is just one more corruptocrat among the 93 that certified the steal by voting against any objections to it on January 6th.

And of the six that DID Object? At least ONE of THEM only voted that way for “Optics.”

Guess which one?

Now tell me again why we should not Primary any of these Derps that do NOT resign?

Want to make it that, have every Republican Senator start pushing for repeal of the 17th Amendment. To use the Left’s idiom.....if they’re all so good and do so much for their respective states and constituents, then they shouldn’t fear having the state legislatures sending someone else Senate.

30 States are Republican...top to bottom, if I’m not mistaken. that’s 60 right there. I think there are only 10 or 11 that are Dem’s top to bottom. That leaves 18 or 20, toss ups. Thinking that those states will go 50/50, or thereabouts, and BAMMM....65-70 Republican’s in the Senate.

Won’t happen though. Folks like Cornyn, Thune, and a few others in the McConnell Squad would probably have to worry a bit about their standing with the folks back at home.

what they don’t understand is Trump is just a symbol of the ire & discontent. They’re no different the leftists since they seem to think in “Cult of Personality” terms. If he was gone it would still be there boiling unde the surface waiting for another opportunity to gel. With Trump its gelled and focused!
