Why climate change is a feminist issue
Metro UK ^ | March 8, 2021 | by Anna Parke

This winter, we experienced snow and double-digit temperatures within the space of a week. Aside from the novelty of such a sudden change during lockdown, it’s a worrying sign of the climate crisis we are now facing.

This we know, but what is said less often is that climate change is a feminist issue – but it is and on International Women’s Day I want you to know why.

Firstly, women and girls are much more likely to be killed or injured in the face of a climate-related disaster.

Few are taught survival skills like how to swim or climb trees. Moreover, due to traditional caring roles, women and girls may prioritise the needs and safety of others, putting them at greater risk.

The impact of climate change may also leave women and girls exposed to different forms of gender-based violence, including child marriage. When floods hit Bangladesh in 2017, for instance,14-year-old Sarmin suddenly had to face the prospect of getting married.

All this paints a bleak picture. But, while women and girls are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis, their knowledge, skills and leadership can also be a powerful defence against it.

I want to highlight what happens when the voices of women and girls are brought into the climate conversation, when their leadership is harnessed, and when they are given the space and opportunity to act.

Traditional patriarchal structures will do little to save us in our fight against climate change. We have to champion women leaders and make sure no one is left behind.

Women and girls are critical agents of change. It’s time we listened to them.

Jaw-dropping stupidity.

But there must be an audience for it.

The author is either a brilliant satirist or she is completely nuts. I’ve haven’t quite decided yet, but I suspect it’s the latter one.

Don’t women have an extra layer of fat? They should do better.

Whoa, snow and cold temps in winter? Floods in Bangladesh? Unimaginable. The only rational solution to this crisis is to shut down the American and European economies and leave those of China and India elsewhere be.

i may be patriarchal, but i can swim and climb trees. if your momma don’t want you doing these things, then she don’t love you.

I had picked today, int’l. pussy hat day, as the day Kamala would assume the role Biden is now performing. Seemed like a probable plot twist in a Hollywood framed story line.

Simple solution Anna: get married to a competent man who can protect you, and keep him sufficiently happy that he would want to take care of you.

But that solution is unacceptable to feminists.

Let me guess, another Journalism Major?

This winter, we experienced snow and double-digit temperatures ...... Does she know that double digit could be anything from 11 to 99?

Few are taught survival skills like how to swim or climb trees....... and swimming and climbing are useful skills how? Maybe hunting, canning, field dressing a deer would be better examples of survival skills.

When floods hit Bangladesh in 2017, for instance,14-year-old Sarmin suddenly had to face the prospect of getting married..... I'm sure there must be a correlation here that I'm missing.

Feminism and climate change come from the same people, so I guess the issues are very much related. An offensive guard and a flanker seem to be doing very different things on a football field, but they are on the same team with the same goal, and they report to the same hierarchy.

That's about as dumb as you can get.

Girls do everything that boys do PLUS they have babies.

Dressed my first deer at age 18. Hubby was pleased...and I did it while wearing a white sweater.

When the weather gets frightful outside, I always comfort myself with the knowledge that yes, at least I do know how to climb trees and swim. So no matter how cold and snowy it gets out there, I remain unafraid.

What are “double digit temperatures”? Even with the metric system I can’t figure that one out. It’s currently a balmy 62F in my office (that’s about 17C) Aren’t those double digit temperatures?

Also, climbing trees is not much of a long term plan.
