Democrats Need a ‘Yes’ Vote on Gun Control from Joe Manchin

The background check gun controls which were introduced in the House last week bring back Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) 2013 gun control push and make his support for the current legislation crucial to Democrat success.

Manchin was elected to the Senate in 2010 with an A-rating from the NRA. But following the December 14, 2012, attack on Sandy Hook Elementary school he emerged as a leading gun control opponent in the Senate.

He, along with Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), introduced universal background check legislation as a response to Sandy Hook. His legislation failed to pass on April 17, 2013, but Manchin tried to revive it again and again in the years that followed.

For example, in April 2015 Breitbart News noted Manchin appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and defended his post-Sandy Hook gun control push as something that “made sense” in 2013 and something that “makes sense now.”

And as recently as August 2019, Manchin suggested Trump could “Make America Safe Again” by giving Republicans political cover to support gun control.

LocalDVM quoted Manchin saying, “These are things that everybody is looking at, democrats and republicans, but I repeat, if the president wants to make America safe again, he has to be the person standing up giving the republican colleagues the cover and courage to do what’s right.”

Now Newsweek reports the universal background legislation currently being pushed harkens back to the similar gun control push undertaken by Manchin after Sandy Hook. Moreover, the outlet suggests House Whip James Clyburn’s (D-SC) so-called “Charleston Loophole” legislation could fall within Manchin’s wheelhouse as well.

Newsweek said, “Manchin’s record on gun control measures is mixed but there is reason to think he could support the bills being reintroduced in the House.”

Hard to see how anyone who boycotted the Georgia Senate Runoffs or supported such, has any standing to complain about their guns about to become illegal - after all, THEY HELPED SCHUMER!

Can we finally stop treating Manchin as this conservative Democrat who'll stop Biden's agenda?

The guy is no better than any of the other filthy Democrats destroying this nation, and should be treated as such. When push comes to shove he's going to vote for Biden and the Rat agenda.

Stop pinning your hopes on this clown.

West Virginia would not be amused if he did.

10? There aren’t 10 RINOs willing to end their Senate career voting for this.

They can get 5 maybe 6.

Then it's dead. With Manchin or without him.

Joe Manchin’s first loyalty is to the Democrat Party. He has yet to identify himself as anything other than a Democrat.

That was my first thought as well. But maybe they’ll try to eliminate the filibuster first.

Please consider the following side note to this thread.

Probably the main reason that elite Democrats and RINOs have been getting away with foul play regarding their unconstitutionally big federal government for the last 70+ years is the following.

Probably few patriots have a grip on the significance of the requirement for constitutionally enumerated powers for the feds to justify anything that they do.

”From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added].” —United States v. Butler, 1936.

Possibly a good way for patriots to challenge the federal government and protect their 2nd Amendment (2A) rights at the same time is this.

Pro-2A patriots, in addition to continuing to support 2A, also need to argue that the states have never expressly constitutionally given the feds the specific power to make peacetime restrictive gun laws, and many other laws and actions that they make and do.

Ironically, the 14th Amendment gives Congress the specific power only to STRENGTHEN constitutionally enumerated rights, including 2A.

Pro-2A patriots who accept this challenge, please report blank look responses to no federal power to make peacetime restrictive gun laws back to FR.

You might add anyone who continues to vote Uniparty (R). After all, without near universal support among elected DC Uniparty (R) hacks for the election night coup NONE of this would be occurring. The Uniparty (R) and it’s useful idiot voting stooges bear more responsibility than even the gun grabbers like Manchin.

But maybe they’ll try to eliminate the filibuster first.

I doubt they have 50 votes for that either. Ending the current phone-it-in filibuster would mean that in order to block legislation senators would have to actually hold the floor for as long as it took. That's too much like work for them.
