Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declined an initial allocation of the newly authorized Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine this week even as nationwide demand continues to outpace available supply.
On Friday, his office and the White House are trying to limit repercussions of that decision.
Duggan, a Democrat who has been mayor since 2014, said he turned down the shipment because the city is able to meet current demand with its supply of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines -- even as his administration expanded vaccine eligibility Thursday to residents ages 50 and older with chronic medical conditions.
"So, Johnson & Johnson is a very good vaccine. Moderna and Pfizer are the best. And I am going to do everything I can to make sure the residents of the city of Detroit get the best," Duggan said during a news conference Thursday.
On Friday, White House officials were pressed on the mayor's comments during a press briefing.
They tried to clarify what Duggan said, claiming the mayor is "very eager for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine," according to White House senior adviser on Covid-19, Andy Slavitt.
"The mayor's office has indicated, after we talked to them, that there was a misunderstanding, that was not the intent of those remarks," Slavitt said.
Duggan's office also released a statement Friday. "I have full confidence that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is both safe and effective," Duggan said in the statement. "We are making plans now for Johnson & Johnson to be a key part of our expansion of vaccine centers and are looking forward to receiving Johnson & Johnson vaccines in the next allocation."
The US Food and Drug Administration on Saturday approved emergency use authorization for the one-dose J&J vaccine, which was found to be 72% effective in the US against moderate to severe/critical

Dugan used to run one of the local hospital organizations.
He’s probably trying to preserve/improve the hospital business.
MI mayors poison their own water, so this isn’t a big deal.
I think he’ll end up regretting that hasty decision.
That is a simpletons understanding of it’s effectiveness.
or maybe the Pfizer people paid him off. it’s detriot (sic), after all. anything is possible.
I think he recanted the next day. I saw it in the article after I did my drive-by post.
I’m going to try to get the J&J so a greater availability might make it easier to do.
The best path in light of this significant info?
Quite easy, but Dems won't like it.
Give citizens all the information, and LET THEM DECIDE which vaccine they want.
Put the relevant comparative info online, let peeps use their reading and analytical skills, form a reasoned opinion and arrive at a rational conclusion and choose the vaccine that suits their circumstance.
.
Based upon all the readinbg I have done, J&J is the vaccine I want. Yes, it has lower efficacy, but it was tested outside the US (South Africa and Brazil) and those variants. So it does well with the SA and SA variants and less better (sorry of the grammar) against the typical US strain. But is is good at preventing you from going to the hospital and dying—that is what is important, yes?
It is a true vaccine, not the first of its kind like Pfizer and Moderna. I am not knocking those two...just that as of yet, we don’t quite know if there will be problems due to it altering DNA. A fantastic technology, but I don’t want to be a test bed for that.
And So with all that in mind I am waiting for the J & J at our local VA.
Good. Send them to Georgia. It’s the only one I’ll take.
I feel exactly the same way as you. If Detroit doesn’t want it, I’ll take it.
[[My understanding is that the J&J vaccine has the lowest efficacy of most all those tested, including some yet to be approved. (Corrections invited]]
My understanding was the reason it is lower is because it was tested against other strains of the virus as well, while the pfizer and moderna wasn’t- at least that is what a news report said the other day-
Prepare to be assimilated.
Resistance is Futile.

It isn’t fair to compare the ONE SHOT J&J vaccine to the two shot Pfizer and Moderna ones.
The first shot of Pfizer for instance, barely confers 50% efficacy.
J&J’s vaccine trial involved 44,000 people, was conducted in eight countries across three continents, with 34 percent of the participants aged over 60.
Efficacy of the vaccine appeared to differ depending on where the trial was being conducted. In the U.S., for example, efficacy against moderate to severe COVID-19 four weeks after the shot was 72 percent.
But in South Africa—where more than 90 percent of COVID-19 cases were caused by the more transmissible 501Y.V2 variant of concern—efficacy against moderate to severe disease was 64 percent, according to documentation.
Notably, overall efficacy against severe disease across all countries and ages was 85 percent, with the shot demonstrating high levels of protection against COVID-19 hospitalization and death.
In fact, no one who got COVID-19 at least four weeks after receiving the vaccine died or had to be hospitalized.
While the vaccine has a lower headline efficacy figure than the Pfizer and Moderna shots, experts say comparing these numbers can be misleading because the clinical trials were conducted in different places at different times.
For example, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was tested more recently than the other two, with the trial involving participants from Brazil and South Africa where new variants of concern were circulating widely.
Early evidence also suggest that the vaccine might also provide protection against asymptomatic infection, although more research is needed to confirm this.
So now we know which companies he holds stock in.
Personally, I would rather take a vaccine with attenuated or inactive antigen then one that injects foreign m-RNA which enters your cells and takes over you cell protein production machinery.
He really wishes for Sinovac, like most of his fellow communists
Pfizer$
It’s less effective against preventing you from getting the disease entirely. However, should you get the disease, it is *extremely* good at preventing severe cases of the disease from progressing to hospitalization or death.
Put it to you this way - it tries to prevent you from coming down with the disease in the first place, but if that fails (33% chance it will) it tries to reduce the symptoms to that of a moderate cold or flu and it’s very good at that. It was also reasonably extensively tested against the more virulent British and South African variants and did pretty well against them too.
