And at the height of the U.S.-China trade spat in 2019, Beijing sought to use rare earth exports as a “counter-weapon” against the United States.

Trump already initiated this earlier. But nice try by the Hidin’ Biden folks to pretend it’s their idea:

Trump is actually the one who did this, several months ago. However, it appears that Biden or whoever has decided not to issue an EO revoking it.
See link below.
We do not need to cuddle Vietnam, or try to find substitutes. We have ample supply right home.
However the environmentalists and the Chinese monopoly are killing us. BTW, Chines actually own right now the Mountain pass mine and whatever is mined there goes to China for processing!

That program was started by DJT.
They also are designating 6 million addition acres of wilderness. Where do you think the minerals and fuels are?
The problem with this handwringing is that minerals are not evenly distributed around the globe. And there are some rare earth minerals in abundance in China that have limited or no known sources in North America. Which is a problem that “more mining” comes nowhere near solving.
I am sure the environmentalists will never allow mining it, but rare earth minerals are found in sea mud.

I bet there are deposits off the US West Coast that haven’t been found yet.
