Hailing her state as the only one in the U.S. that did not declare shelter-in-place orders, mask mandates, business closures, or defining essential business, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem fired back at the national failing of U.S. health experts during the pandemic.
“I don’t know if you agree with me, but Dr. [Anthony] Fauci is wrong a lot,” Noem said during her CPAC speech Saturday, pointing to the top U.S. infectious disease expert who told her South Dakota would get up to 10,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations in a day.
Her state never got over 600, she said.
“My administration resisted the call for virus control at the expense of everything else,” she continued, noting hospitalizations and not infection rates were her primary concern. “We looked at the science, the data, and the facts, and then we took a balanced approach.
“Truthfully, I never thought that the decisions that I was making were going to be unique. I thought that there would be more than would follow basic conservative principles, but I guess I was wrong.”
The early lockdowns were a step that would have locked down her state through the fall when the pandemic peaked, she said, calling out the “coercion, the force, and the anti-liberty steps the governments take to enforce them.”.
“Often the enforcement isn’t based on facts; justifying these mitigation efforts has been anything but scientific,” Noem said.
Noem got laughs as she noted ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to give Noem advice on handling the pandemic.
“Now seems like a really good time to remind everyone of what Gov. Cuomo was doing in New York,” she said, breaking down the allegations involving Cuomo’s withholding of COVID-19 death counts of seniors in longterm living facilities, after he mandated the homes to take in infected patients instead of sending them to an empty Navy ship and field hospitals.
“Now, that is the media’s COVID hero.”
KN is liking national exposure.
Either she has plans for National Office or she just likes kicking butt.
She and DeSantis is proof that it wasn’t covid that killed the economy.

Absolutely. SD is a small state, population-wise, and Florida is a big state with an entirely different economy. But we have both done well because our governors didn’t drink the Fauci Kool Aid. Makes you realize how important Governors are.
Noem is a gem and a beacon for conservatives.
I doubt she'll seek higher office, she's a country girl who despises the D.C. Swamp.

I am for the first time in quite some time faced with a dilemma politically, who do I like better Noem or Desantis. The answer, I like them both equally well.
If they can manage to maintain their compass headings after President Trump’s 2024 win and second term we as a party will have to face a tough choice in choosing between those two.
Pick now. Trump won’t win again. DeSantis has managed a huge state. Noem needs some “seasoning”.

I bet some of the other Republican governors didn’t particularly appreciate her remarks, though. Many of them did lock down their states.

local politics are more important then national politics. if there had been better control of county precincts on the state level there is no way those backing the ((Unpresident)) bidden could of stolen the election like they did. on the state level we can negate a lot of the executive decisions that are not based on laws passed and on those that are based on laws we can set up legal challenges in the courts....This all comes from controlling state and county politics.
The incompetent idiot RINO clown governor of Idaho is a good example. He followed the jackass fauci in everything, except for one thing, he never dictated a statewide mask mandate.
Unfortunately the recall effort last summer fell well short.

The governor of Iowa pretty much shut things down for a while, too. I hope KN doesn’t make too many people in the party angry with her indirect criticism of other Republicans. She will need them, unfortunately, if she wants to go beyond her home state.
They deserve criticism for acting like sheep instead of responsible chief executives.
