For President Biden, rebuilding U.S. ties with Europe damaged by four years of Donald Trump's contentious leadership is a top priority.
"Let me erase any lingering doubt,” Biden said during a virtual appearance at the Munich Security Conference, “the United States will work closely with our European Union partners to meet the shared challenges we face. We continue to support the goal of a Europe whole and free and at peace.”
For European leaders dismayed by Trump’s “America First” cold shoulder, Biden’s election has come as a relief. He has rejoined the Paris climate agreement and the World Health Organization, reaffirmed American’s commitment to NATO and has signaled that he will seek to jump-start the Iran nuclear deal.
Images of the former U.S. president shoving aside the prime minister of Montenegro as he did at his first NATO summit in 2017 and telling the world at a Finland summit that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s word over his own intelligence, or announcing before the U.N. that his administration “accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country” — a comment that drew loud laughter from the General Assembly — are indelibly etched in the minds of those across the ocean.
Trump went on to slap 25 percent tariffs on European exports to the U.S., such as wine and cheese.
“The four years of Trump were very traumatic,” says Rosa Balfour, director of Carnegie Europe. Balfour says the European attitude toward Trump became more about “damage control and containment.”.
Despite the precariousness of the moment, there’s a sense that if anyone is able to heal the wounds inflicted by Trump, it is Joe Biden.
The key, said Balfour, is doing what incoming Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised: to be humble and listen to allies.

Humble, listen....aka.....pass the money please.
Total opinion piece projected as a news story.
Aren't they all?
Translation: For European leaders dismayed by President Trump insisting they actually meet their own commitments regarding Eurpoean self-defense...
Ties, yes; respect, no. The respect was engendered via Trump’s insistence, at the expense of a few hurt buts.
But yeah, now back to subservience. So that’s their favorite posture for us.
Editorialized headline, of course.
Europe was taking advantage of us - “ripping us off” as President Trump said, especially in respect to their obligations under NATO. They started fulfilling their own obligations under pressure...they didn’t like it. So we now we need to “mend” the relationship so they can happily go back to ripping us off again?
That’s reported as a positive?
Rebuild trust?!
The EU helped Deep State install BiteMe.
Biden is being castigated by most of Europe! Only China and Iran approve.
Trump should have pulled out of NATO when he had the chance.
Looks like DNC newspuppet Melissa Rossi forgot to mention KKK Joe’s racist outburst against Corn Pop and his brethren...
‘America First’ is how the US Government is SUPPOSED to operate...
Bendover Joe
PedJoek is hoping that some Iranian kids will come feel his leg hair.
The only ones who are going to win in the Biden Presidency are:
China
Europe
Hunter
Illegal aliens
Undocumented criminals
Why would an American care about this? Also NATO is a waste of money for all countries involved...the Soviet Union no longer exists.
