Road Trip: MacDill Air Force Base, Florida

FLmacdill2

MacDill Air Force Base (MacDill AFB) is a United States Air Force installation located 4 miles south-southwest of downtown Tampa, Florida.

The "host wing" for MacDill AFB is the 6th Air Refueling Wing (6 ARW), assigned to the Eighteenth Air Force (18AF) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC).

FLmacdill5

MacDill became an Air Mobility Command installation in 1996 and home to the 6th Air Refueling Wing, its 310th Airlift Squadron flying the C-37A, and its 50th Air Refueling Squadron and 91st Air Refueling Squadron flying the KC-135. The 6 ARW is further augmented by the Air Force Reserve Command's 927th Air Refueling Wing (927 ARW) and 63d Air Refueling Squadron flying the same KC-135s.

FLmacdill4

MacDill AFB is also home to the headquarters for two of the U.S. military's unified combatant commands: Headquarters, United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), and Headquarters, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Both commands are independent from one another and each is commanded by a respective 4-star general or admiral.

Two additional sub-unified commands are also headquartered at MacDill AFB: Commander, United States Marine Corps Forces Central Command (COMUSMARCENT), commanded by a 3-star general, and United States Special Operations Command Central (USSOCCENT), commanded by a 2-star general or admiral.

FLmacdill3

The 6th Air Refueling Wing (6 ARW) at MacDill AFB operates 24 KC-135R Stratotankers providing day-to-day mission support to more than 3,000 personnel in its immediate command, along with more than 50 mission partners comprising over 12,000 additional personnel, to include the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), United States Marine Forces Central Command (USMARCENT), and United States Special Operations Command Central (USSOCCENT).

The 6 ARW also has a collocated Air Force Reserve "Associate" wing at MacDill, the 927th Air Refueling Wing (927 ARW) of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). The 6 ARW and the 927 ARW operate and share the same assigned KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft.

The 6 AMW's 3,000-person force organized into four groups, in addition to the wing commander's immediate staff.

Hi Kathy, we've had a warm-up so all our snow is gone.

The mountain passes however have been closed off and on.

The main west-east mountain pass here has had a total so far this winter of 38' of snow, that's 38 feet! Shut down several times for avalanche control.

Doing OK on my end.

Howdy, PRO.

Good googly-moogly, there’s been a lot of snow in your mountains!
Better there than in your front yard. LOL

Hey, there, radu!

Things are going well down here, except that I have to have a tooth pulled tomorrow. Ouch! That’s not a good thing. LOL! We got up to nearly 70 here and it was nice to have the doors open to let fresh air in.

Glad that it was nice there, too. I hope you have more of that before the next cool down. At least it won’t be Arctic cold this time, huh!

Hiya radu!

Yup, the major 6 lane highway between east and western Washington state has been closed several times because of the huge snowfall.

They use military grade howitzers to blast mountain sides to make the dangerous snow fall before it becomes a problem on the freeways, and before they reopen them.

It was 60 degrees here today, all the snow has melted, WOO-HOO!

Yes better, still rested all day today.
I’m not being stupid anymore.

Thanks for asking!

Oh boy! Tooth pulled tomorrow. I know you’re looking forward to that!
NOT!

We weren’t quite as warm as y’all - - 53 was the best we could do today. Mid 60s the next two, then back into the 50s for a couple of days. Back to the 60s this weekend. They were calling for cooler weather a couple of days ago but I like the updated forecast much better. LOL

We do have rain through the weekend into next week but we’ll gladly take it. It was awfully dry here Dec. and Jan. and the water table needs a bump.

Man, what a mess in your mountains. I didn’t know it got that bad. I’ve seen videos of people using howitzers to create controlled (as much as you CAN control) avalanches in various mountains so understand what you’re talking about. It can be quite a show!

Dang, y’all were warmer than we were today. Our snow is all gone, too, and none in the foreseeable future is on its way.
If you get more, do NOT send it here! LOL!!!

Glad to hear it. And good that you rested today. The last thing we want to hear is that you’re in the hospital again.

Our water table needs a kick in the pants. LOL! Our weather for the rest of the week sounds similar. What I wouldn’t give for about 24 hours of slow, lovely, fragrant rain, though.

Yes! 2 years ago at this time I was still in and coming out of the coma.
Still the only time I spent anytime in a hospital in my life.
Hopefully the last.

Yeah, you could really use some rain, no doubt about that.

The rain coming here is coming up from the south and will give us around 2 inches between Fri. and Tues. That’s what we need rather than 2 inches all at once.

We got .9 an inch last night and that puts us at about 5 inches for the month. That’s MUCH better than the 13+ inches we got last Feb. That was far too much rain.

How's everyone doing this morning?

That’s great, and it’s enough to keep the water table up without it flooding everything and making a mess.I’m just glad we had all that snow. It melted pretty slowly and gave us some much needed moisture.

Much more like it. There were flooded areas all around here for weeks after all the rain we got last this time last year. Same thing the year before. It took a long time to dry out enough to get crops planted.

How much snow did you wind up with when all was said and done? Every little bit of moisture helps.

Good evening/morning, radu...hope your temps are staying above freezing.

We actually had some sunshine today. My plow guy came today, but really had trouble with getting the snow on the lawn. Sure hope his boss, or whomever, gets here tomorrow and gets a truck load out of here. If not, they will have to put it in the driveway where a trailer used to sit.

It has been a zoo....several having connectivity issues, and Ruthe completely down and out with internet service. Most all of us are on GCI. Thankfully mine stayed up all day. For a while the boss couldn’t get on.
