A South Carolina armed home invader who attacked a 79-year-old woman near her back door is dead after the victim’s 82-year-old Vietnam War veteran husband beat him down with the butt end of a shotgun earlier this week, according to local authorities.
Herbert Parrish snatched the firearm off a wall mount after the suspect, identified as 61-year-old Harold Runnels, broke into the home with a knife, knocked his wife to the ground and slashed her forehead Monday afternoon, Columbia, S.C.-based FOX 57 reported.
He lived in a nearby mobile home community, according to WJBF-TV, and approached by knocking on the back door and asking if the couple had seen a missing dog.
Runnels later died at a hospital due to injuries suffered in the scuffle, according to authorities.
Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eric Abdullah, a department spokesman, said residents should call 911 immediately if they suspect their home is being broken into.
"Of course, folks have the right to defend themselves if their lives are in danger, but the best thing to do is to call for help," he told the Aiken Standard newspaper.

what an idiotic statement by the sheriff.
best thing to do is call
not in cases where you want to survive an attack idiot sheriff
Agree. Idiot.
I would have called 911 to get someone to remove the stink from my house. The advise this deputy gave was stupid.
The Aiken County Sheriff Captain isn’t the brightest bulb in law enforcement. The invader was in the home attacking the elderly woman so Capt. Abdullah wants the husband to say to the intruder and his injured wife, “Excuse me while I call the sheriff/police and see how long it will take them to get here”.
In my house, the invader would look like “human sushi, ground beef, swiss cheese, and stuffed sausage” before a 911 operator could say “What can I help you with?” To which we would say, a large coal shovel and a couple of body bags.
The last punk who attacked my son, unprovoked, might still be in the hospital. There was no time to call the police but the punk was too stupid to think that attacking a combat veteran/former police officer is a BAD IDEA!!
PS: He was lucky that my son had left his licensed CCP gun at home or else he would have been, like the snipers my qualified (combat) sharpshooter son took out in sand-country, very dead and “resting in pieces”.
A “Man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do”.
Abdullard.
Gonna ask for that to be deleted - even though they were on their local news
Save your ammo.
Good thinking.
89 vs. 61? Good odds. 28 years his junior. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
For what, pizza???
A large pepperoni would probably arrive faster than the popo in any case.
Why would you think that? Husband’s a Vet, to him it was like digging a slit trench for the officers or taking the trash out.. gotta’ be done. 👍
I fully endorse this home defense method.
I’m not sure if they teach soldiers the spirit of the bayonet anymore, but apparently, once learned, you don’t forget how to utilize a weapon to it’s fullest potential.
Rd later.
The woman was obviously inhospitable and probably not wearing her hijab. The husband should have understood his guest’s righteous anger and not let thw situayion get out of hand.
Poke him in the gut real hard with the barrel, then verticle butt stroke his forehead as he’s bending forward. Continue the beat down until the threat is neutralized. Don’t forget, you do have a gun in your hands if you choose to use it as such in the defense of self or others.
Agreed.
In today’s climate, apparently you can’t defend yourself or your family.
Instead you have to wait for the police to show up.
The same police officers who have endured so much criticism.
These people made their beds; now they must lie in them.
Do not blame the police one bit.0
Well, the gun was on a wall mount. Know nothing about guns but I imagine it was a collector’s item.
Maybe he had no ammo, thinking he would never use it.
What you said. We should pray for this man.
That is what I thought immediately.
He well trained. And 82? Wow. Kudos to him.
