What we've gone through in the past year, to have that much hope be delivered in a row, that is absolutely phenomenal. To be Southern means to love thy neighbor and love thy Whataburger, are we right?

To that point, patrons of one Whataburger in the Pensacola suburb, Pace, embodied the best of both virtues with a chain of more than 100 customers buying food for the people behind them in the drive-thru line.

Stupid. Buy for someone who needs the charity. Drive through customers do not need charity.

Something being Nazarene charity or not is not a huge concern of mine.

“California does not have the most pleasant people in the world, though.”

It sure did when I arrived here 47 years ago, but it has really changed for the worse, especially here in Silicon Valley. Too much success, too much money, too many money-grubbers, too many cultures who seem to hate civility itself, too many people full of themselves, everybody racing around for no reason. Ugh.

I grew up in Queens and have lived in Massachusetts for the past 40+ years. I know unpleasant people. California (in my limited experience) used to be Midwest nice, but they’ve gotten too full of themselves. Went from Jim Rockford to Nazi Plugosi. There are jerks and nice people everywhere, but the atmosphere is different, in different countries and places. Biggest jerks in the world inhabit the region around the District of Columbia, or as Nazi Plugosi calls it Festung Columbia.

They’re probably celebrating the spirit behind this:

I’ve been through two of these, very recently, at Starbucks. I end the chain by tipping the attendant/barista $10. She gets extra gas moola and an actual connection is made.

Actually only the first guy paid for 2 orders. I guess #106 took his free meal and didn't pay for the guy behind him.

Could be that there was no one in line behind #106.

I had something similar happen to me at a Chick-FIL-A a few years back. Lady in front paid for mine. I had cash and offered to pay for the car behind me, but they'd already paid by debit, offered to pay for the one behind that, debit also, so gave 'em the $20 I was going to use for mine and told 'em to put it toward the next cash customer.

Why is it that every time I go through the drive-thru I get my order within seconds and I’m on my merry way, but the car in front of me always takes ten minutes to get his or her order?

Cuz they ordered the one-off fried item no one else likes and it takes five minutes to cook it and get it out the door.

They intended to pay for their food anyway. Why would they need someone to pick up their “tab”

Oh I get it your jewish...we share the same good book and its concern for the poor.

(Leviticus 25:35–36)

“If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.”

Okay. But how do they know it’s me behind them? Or do I take things personally just because the world revolves around me?

That would have been me. Or the mom of two with 2 jobs buying lunch for her kiddos on a rare break between shifts who, posed with the matter of paying for the people behind her, said “F that sh!t! I’ll pay my own bill, thank you very much!”

What really irritates me about drive-throughs is when they person in front of me has a complicated order. All I want is a medium black coffee and I have to idle for minutes and minutes while the car in front of me has bags, cups, straws, napkins and whatnot passed through the window. Then there is much scurrying in the car as the driver passes everything around or tries to get it all on the passenger seat floor so that it doesn't spill all over the place when he starts driving. Then you have to go through the whole getting change routine and the asking of the extra napkins and straws.

Then finally, when the entire order is filled, the car pulls up 2 feet and then suddenly stops, as the driver now realizes that everything has to be rearranged so that it doesn't spill all over the place.

I love Whataburger! I got in my 4WD Yukon last night and made my way thru the snow and ice to get me a Mushroom Swiss with fries and a Coke. First time I had gotten out since the cold and snow started here in Dallas.

Man I’d have been the one who ended it at position 106. I am all for charity but I’d feel strangely pressured, unsure of what I would end up paying for, worried about doing something wrong, overextending myself...

I guess if the guy ahead of me paid for me I’d try it but what if the guy behind me is getting dinner for 10?

I hate getting trapped in a drive through. If I’m not the only car I usually park and go in.

Drive through customers do not need charity.

Exactly. I've posted before about making from scratch 5-6 Schlotsky's 6" sandwiches at home for the price of one at the window. If you're in need, you shouldn't be eating out. But every restaurant has a "We accept EBT cards" sign. Stupid gimme, gimme people. No, the rest of us are the stupid ones to allow EBT cards on our hard earned dimes to be used so wastefully.
