Bill Gates: My green manifesto

The billionaire philanthropist offers four bold ideas to help business take on the climate crisis

----

[cut]

It took me years to come to this point of view. I became interested in climate change not as an environmentalist, but as an advocate for global health and development.

Since the early 2000s, my wife Melinda and I have been funding efforts to improve health and fight poverty in lower- and middle-income countries. A few times a year, I would travel abroad for the chance to see the work in action. Often, I’d fly into a country at night and be struck by the immensity of the darkness. A billion people, I learnt, did not have access to reliable electricity. Around half of them lived in sub-Saharan Africa. (Today the global number is about 860m people.)

It became obvious that it would be virtually impossible to make real inroads on disease and poverty when more than one in 10 people on Earth did not have reliable access to all the benefits of energy — lights for schools and health clinics, transportation between work and home, fertiliser for crops, even air-conditioning to withstand rising temperatures.

But achieving a modern lifestyle depends on fossil fuels. And the problem is simple: we can’t afford to release more greenhouse gases. In fact, we need to stop releasing them altogether, and do it by 2050.

That there is a climate crisis is a big lie.

It’s nonsense and insane that people believe it.

Gates, here is my “Green” Manifesto: Give away all your greenbacks to struggling business owners, farmers, and families. Then stop your useless preaching.

Old Bill needs to be separated from his money and his life for a year, and be made to live life like We The People.

Go to a job, worry about his retirement, and give Uncle Sam 25% of his income off the top. Buy groceries, and go home to his family. Worry about health care, whether some super rich guy with a desire to remove half of the world’s population has designed a virus and vaccine to accomplish his goals, and wonder if the government is going to come after him because he has different ideas.

I give zero f_cks what a billionaire thinks the world should look like, as he doesn’t live the life he is demanding we live.

Lead by example Gates. Or just shut up.

The ultimate narcissist. His family and personal staff have the carbon footprint of a small town. His homes, vehicles and private jet consume more energy in a day than the average American in decades yet he dares to demand significant changes in behavior from the public while he continues to enjoy the super lavish lifestyle of the ultra wealthy. Al Gore, John Kerry, Leonardo DiCaprio are climate change advocates who behave the same.

Name the wealthy progressive who has shed his or her real estate portfolio, private jet, and fleet of gas guzzling vehicles for an off the grid tiny house with a a completely carbon neutral footprint. Anyone who believed climate change was a real emergency would act accordingly in his/her personal behavior.

More rules for thee do not apply to me elitist thinking.

Promote Capitalism, Democracy and freedom and the rest will take care of itself, Willy, you jackass. And much faster than your stupid liberal policies.

Well said, I would add only that anyone who believes climate change was a real emergency would advocate for nuclear energy.

The absence of nuclear as a solution belies the fundamental assumption.

The craziest part is that they think we can control the climate.
The number of variables involved, many unknown, creates an amazingly complex algorithm that no one knows.

Green Premium

There's no such thing as a Green Premium, only a Green Discount. True green costs less, not more. More expensive means more energy consumption is going on somewhere, and indirectly more pollution is being generated. To find out where, just follow the money.

All economic activity consumes energy. In a free market, prices end up being directly proportional to energy use, and pollution. Successful businesses are the most energy efficient at what they do, government organizations the least.

Energy is the root expense of all economic activity. If energy prices increase 15%, that ripples downstream to everything else. Newton's third law requires living standards decline 15%.
