The veteran New York Times reporter who tendered his resignation after allegations he used the N-word during a 2019 trip with high-schoolers also argued that “racism is over” and that black people “can get out of the ghetto if they want to” during the trip, according to a student who attended.
Donald McNeil — the Grey Lady’s public health reporter during the coronavirus pandemic — allegedly made the remarks during a July 2019 trip to Peru as part of the broadsheet’s “Times Journeys” program, a student on the trip told the paper.
Sophie Shepherd recalled that one of her first interactions with McNeil was trying to strike up a conversation with him about the trip’s optional reading assignment, “Guns, Germs, and Steel,” a 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning history book criticized in retrospect for a soft approach to colonialism, Shepherd told the Times in a piece published Sunday.

Racism is over. When was the last lynching?
There will always be racism.
In corporations I have worked in, it’s definitely better to be a minority or a woman. “Too many” EE’s are White males.
Me thinks don is way off here. It’s just starting and guess who’s the receiver now?
Racism elected Hussein Obama.
.
“racism is over”
apparently not
Fake! Nobody reporting for the NYT would ever willingly resign over saying something “racist”.
Some black people want to stay in the ghetto... and some want to get into the ghetto. Where my wife grew up, she had black neighbors (nice neighborhood). Some of the black family members remain to this day, 60 years later. Anyway, was talking to one of them and he lamented that his grandkids were talking like ghetto kids, and kept hanging out in the ghetto. They're middle class, get and have everything, but feel they're missing out of the "ghetto" experience. Stupid is, as stupid does.
Which would be more racist, saying “black people can get out of the ghetto if they want to” or saying “black people can’t get out of the ghetto if they want to”?
‘black people “can get out of the ghetto if they want to”’
Correct; study and graduate, stay sober, don’t get pregnant before you’re graduated and married, and you’re practically guaranteed to not be poor.
Anti white racism is prevalent
It seems like any black in the ghetto can get a decent job by acting in TV commercials. Has to be over 80% no matter what the product.
This article should make clear that he used the n-word in a conversation about the n-word. He didn’t call anyone an n-word.
See my tad line. Melanin elected Obama. Obama was not descended from slaves nor was he disadvantaged in any way by the system he was born into.
Orientals or other races don’t count as being adversely afflicted by racism; as in say selective college admissions. Racism in the current state of affairs applies only to negative actions or even implied perceptions of negativity toward blacks. Negative actions or thoughts expressed against other races don’t count and aren’t protected.
This one direction persecution complex cannot even be discussed as it is itself per se racist, by the current definition.
As long as there are democrats there will be racism.
He’s a foolish liberla who thought he could have an academic discussion with intellectuals on race. You can’t have that with left-wingers. They look for faults to crucify anyone, especially liberals who have authority over them.
Don’t have a conversation with these sorts. Let them be angry and ignorant till they learn to think.
The sad thing is, all this racial violence over BLM, is causing
people to extrapolate out that violent behavior over a broader
segment of the black populace than it really is. so how do you
know who is problematic and who isn’t. Until you’re waking
up from being unconscious, it’s hard to tell.
That sort of thing has set back race relations by decades > IMO.
