PARIS - It is the classic romantic combination: St Valentine’s Day in Paris, the city of love, and a gift of red roses. But some Parisian florists are trying to wean customers off the flowers because of their ecological cost.
Most roses sold in France in the run-up to St Valentine’s Day, a peak sales period for the global flower industry, have to be imported by air freight from countries such as Kenya, resulting in carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.
Florists worried at the environmental damage from this trade say there are viable alternatives that can be grown locally and they are trying to encourage customers to try them.
But old habits die hard. Celine Argente, the 40-year-old owner of the Sylvine flower shop in Paris, said she had been encouraging clients to buy red tulips as a way of declaring their love. But despite that, her shop this week was packed to the rafters with red roses, to meet demand.
“It’s a classic which people can’t change from,” she said. “The red rose remains the flower for Valentine’s Day.”

To to true to this ideal, France must end ALL imports and exports that rely on carbon-emitting transport.
I always tell people who want to “save” the planet to go off themselves. I love messing with commies.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday for women and one which men would really rather not bother with. So give them the excuse of saving the planet; and not waste money on flowers.
You win; Save the planet and not cut down living flowers to give to women to watch them die over the next few days.

I’ve been ordering roses from a local florist for years. Their bouquets are always vibrant and last for a couple of weeks. I’ve ordered bouquets from online outfits, and I don’t know what they do to those buds; but I’ve yet to have a bouquet that lasted more than a week. The roses wilt and die quickly, and yes, I trim the stems and put a mixture of sugar and aspirin in the water.
Hey France - build a (*^*&% Greenhouse if you don’t want to fly-in flowers.
