Words like "historic," "unprecedented," and "extreme" are being thrown around like eggs from a short-order cook. It's easy to dismiss these terms as hyperbole but rest assured, this freeze could rival the storied ones from decades ago and bring the first single digits to Houston in over 30 years and for only the fifth time in our history.
So just how extreme and rare is the freeze we're facing? Well, meteorologist Joe Bastardi from WeatherBell had this to say on Wednesday: "if this arctic outbreak were a hurricane, Texas would be taking a direct hit from a category 5." Pretty strong statement if you ask me.

This is the coldest it has been in Houston since the 1980s.
The panhandle can be really cold as there is nothing between them and the North Pole except a barbed wire fence.
Houston has palm trees.
I miss Guam. It is 85 there right now!
Since she mentioned the Paluxy River, may have been the hills between Bluffdale and Tolar or the hill coming out of the Trinity River bottoms out of Whiskey Flats to Benbrook.
I was staying at a beach house on Galveston Island when the '89 cold snap hit, and we did that. In the morning there was an ice sickle hanging from the faucet, and the pipes were frozen solid.
I remember it well
My younger daughter was a newborn
We were visiting my hometown of Jackson Mississippi
My aunt and uncle from Dallas were there too
We stayed in a cheap motel because mom insisted to save money even though my dad and mom and little brother had flown in on dads souped up Beech Duke....a plane even today is 300,000 and up with fresh annuals
It was snowing and around zero to five for about five days
Unbelievable
I’ll never forget it
We flew from Miami to Jackson commercial to meet everyone and it was 33 at MIA that morning.....me Brasil wifey who was like WTH and a one year old and a two month old
My dad after one day freezing at the motel rented the hospitality suite of five rooms and a great room....for all of us
The hotel owner there was the daddy of the stupid girl who wrote The Help
A movie many Freepers view as a documentary like they do Mississippi Burning or Deliverance
My mom was squeaky tight
I snuck off and duck hunted in the Delta...rib was furious
I guess it depends on the individual well. Most of the high-volume wells around here are pretty hot so they will be fine. But many of the thousands of stripper wells will freeze up. It happens even during one of the normal “cold snaps” around here. The price has gone up some but the traders must think that there will not be many problems or the price would skyrocket.
My roommate and I in college used to purposefully drive down US 180 through the Palo Pinto Mountains back in ‘83 for the scenery while we were heading back to Lubbock. We used to cut down a cedar tree on the side of the road to be used as our Christmas tree. We got one snow that year in Lubbock that was 18”. I think it is still the daily record. It got down around zero a couple mornings.
The problem is that a lot of houses have pipes up in the attic and they freeze. When they thaw, the pipes can be busted and there is trubber.
Good plan.
Did not know what snowplow was back then.
Moved out of Clement to apt. Roommates were from ranches and liked to have the windows open when it was 23 and the wind howling out of the North.
Moved from Houston to 100 miles away down Highway 59 during that freeze. U-Haul delayed us about 2 hours as their diesel in the rental truck had “gelled” it was so cold. We drove VERY carefully over the overpasses on the way.
Carla made landfall were we are near now. The old farmhouse out here on our property survived Carla and everything since.
The temps up north will be coldest on Sunday. Then the weather warms up to close to normal by Wednesday. Also, due to piss poor governance, load is probably lower due to businesses activity is down. Fingers crossed.
Remember the mid 1990s? Trunkline system went down.
We’re south east of Austin and prepared as possible . The well is secure , we hope the rest of the plumbing will also hold with our prep . We live on 2 acres of semi tropical landscaping. I don’t think it will survive .
On a lighter note , I plan to wear a fur to the grocery store 😎
I was in Carpenter, Coleman, and then Gaston. The year I lived off campus at 4th and Slide was the year of the big snow.
You must know all about NGPL.
One wonders how many made up ballot fans know where Houston got it’s name.
I did at one time.
Motor oil viscosity—needs a change? Have fun finding Arctic blend down south.
Texas pipelines still electrically driven?
