Remember when Houston froze in 1989? A new, unprecedented freeze could bring record lo

Words like "historic," "unprecedented," and "extreme" are being thrown around like eggs from a short-order cook. It's easy to dismiss these terms as hyperbole but rest assured, this freeze could rival the storied ones from decades ago and bring the first single digits to Houston in over 30 years and for only the fifth time in our history.

So just how extreme and rare is the freeze we're facing? Well, meteorologist Joe Bastardi from WeatherBell had this to say on Wednesday: "if this arctic outbreak were a hurricane, Texas would be taking a direct hit from a category 5." Pretty strong statement if you ask me.

Depends on snow cover. WIth just a few inches or less it will stay a bit warmer. With 6 inches or more up to and through OK, the bottom will drop out. The NWS now thinks zero or below to the NW of Ft. Worth.

“Hope the pipelines transporting natural gas don’t freeze. Could be some frenzied days in the natural gas market.”

It won’t get cold enough in Texas to freeze natural gas, but all bets are off regarding the valves and regulators.

That was a bad one. We woke up on Nov. 15th, opening deer season and it was bad already. Every year we stayed for 2 weeks, then every weekend. Same year I stepped up to my knees crossing the Paluxy river. We hit a mail box coming home. We left a note and replaced it later :)

Vehicles were stranded going up a hill on 377. We got out and helped push. Someone in a jeep was charging 5.00 to pull vehicles up the hill and tried to run over my husband because he didn’t like our interference in his money making.

Good times! Good times!

Pipelines need flowing gas. Hope the wellheads don’t freeze. Keep the gas flowing! Pipelines will declare critical time at their city gates minimizing the the difference between nominated gas and actual usage. All city utilities will be buying city gate gas at daily prices the day before flow. When pipelines declare critical (end of day or hourly), utilities watch their flow very closely. Utilities will be depending on field storage. Hope the valves and regulators don’t freeze up. You can imagine the pull on the pipelines when people turn up their thermostats in the morning.

Don’t miss those days. Pipelines will watch their pressure very closely.

Lovely meeting you!

“What about water pipes?”

Depends on the weather. if the weather doesn’t get below 30, you’re probably ok.

At 25-30, I would cover my faucets, and that has always worked.

Below 25, then two choices - if no one is going be around for a while, it’s smart to shut off water at the meter. If home, then keep the water moving, which means all valves open somewhat, and be sure to consider any unused or rarely used water branches, such as for dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, etc. Also hot water lines, which may not get use. Think about every location where water can flow and try to figure out a way to flow the water, particularly if they’re branched off in the attic.

That’s my plan.

I know Texans aren’t used to this kind of weather, but it beats where I am in Iowa. There may be records set here this weekend and we keep getting snow. I am so sick of winter.

Simply amazing what Biden has been able to accomplish in less than a month.

He has stopped global warming dead in its tracks.

I think December of '83 should be the benchmark.

Snow & ice. Below freezing for 7-8 days. Many types of plants died.

All those palm trees people planted since then? Expect them to be gone.

Me in '83? Much younger then. I went varmint hunting in Palo Pinto & Erath counties.
