Police in dorms, outdoor exercise ban: UC Berkeley extends dorm lockdown with stricter mandates
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 9, 2021 | Joshua Bote

Police officers monitoring dormitory halls, frequent inspections of student ID cards — these are among the measures being implemented in a dorm lockdown as UC Berkeley continues to grapple with a spike of COVID-19 cases on campus.

First reported by the Daily Californian, the self-sequester mandate for UC Berkeley students living in the dormitories, originally intended to end Monday, has been extended for another week, with stricter security measures in place.

“We don’t wish for residents to be alarmed by this increased UCPD presence, but we must ensure the health of our community,” an email sent out to students reads. The email also notes that more university staff will be monitoring dorms, in addition to campus security officers.

Another new measure also in place: a ban on solitary outdoor exercise, which was not in place during the initial lockdown period. (Alameda County does not have this ban in place.)

"We are working with the city of Berkeley to determine whether outdoor exercise may be permitted, and we will provide more information on this in the near future," reads a memo from the university on the matter.

The policies that remain in effect for students include not leaving their rooms unless it is to obtain a COVID-19 test or medical care (including mental health care), use the bathroom or grab food from the dining halls.

Students who violate these measures, the university says, may face the threat of suspension or removal from dorms.

The self-sequester only affects students living in Berkeley-sponsored dorms and not those living in housing off-campus or apartments owned by the school.

Students have allegedly reported external violations of COVID-19 guidelines, however — including parties in fraternities and other, off-campus sites.

The GOP should position itself as the party that doesn't want to put you under house arrest, with police outside your door. Even Berkeley students do not deserve to be treated like this.

This is a huge reason I’m considering off-campus, non university affiliated housing for my current senior HS son. He will likely attend college in a red state, but still.

I’ve learned from his older brothers to never choose a “university-related” anything. College kids shouldn’t go to a university doctor or university lawyer. There are NO privacy rights with them, and the doc or lawyer will spill all kinds of beans to the school with bad consequences for the student (I learned this the hard way with my 2nd son).

Only off campus housing, meals, doctors, lawyers. Universities are tyrannical and busybodies.

I had to go all the way to the last paragraph to find out that people had tested positive, not that anyone was sick. If someone had gotten sick or died, it would have been in the lead paragraph. The reason there are off campus gatherings is the students are not perceiving any danger. Trust me, if people were getting sick or dieing there would be no off campus activity. Chances are everyone would go home. Why, then, this rediculous level of security?

University presidents are among the biggest cowards in America ... if not the biggest group of cowards.

Our lower level elementary, middle and high schools are already prison training grounds for the prolies, it’s nice to see they also want to train our future betters for prison life.

My two daughters graduated from UC in California. Both campuses mandated dorm living for the first year. My younger daughter hated it, because she initially was in a shared dorm room with 5 other girls and the others were party types while she was studious. She was able to later switch to a shared dorm with 1 other girl and did fine. In the 2nd year she moved off-campus to an apartment and was happy, biking to campus daily.

Find a college that doesn't require dorm living.

If the pandemic was a serious threat the campus would be closed—totally closed to everyone.

These half-measures are bizarro world by any standard.

LMAO. Honestly, I’m not even mad. They’re getting EXACTLY what they’re paying for at UC Berkeley, and California voters are getting exactly what they voted for in their state university system. Not my tribe, not my problem. If they want to live under communist authoritarianism, ok, just keep that far out of my Texas.

Oklahoma and South Dakota have some good colleges, and no restrictions!

Have a friend whose daughter was at a college that did this crazy stuff last semester. She left that school and is now attending college in Oklahoma - safely - and without these tyrannic edicts.

Thanks! But as a CA kid. . .he wants “nowhere cold” so he’s applied to TX, OR, AZ, CA, NV, and LA colleges.

He only wants warm weather and in-person classes—the cost of these colleges are nearly the same and so in the end he will choose from whichever ones appear to want to be open and stay open. Apparently not CA.

Which category does "booty calls" fall under? They don't expect healthy, young kids to give that up, do they?

Upon closer scrutiny, it appears that panty raids are not
included under this ban.
Thank you God!
