Sasse's message to Nebraska GOP as he faces censure: 'Politics isn't about the weird worship of one dude'

Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska stood firm against leaders of his state's Republican Party on Thursday after they advanced a censure resolution against him for decrying efforts to overturn the election results and then-President Donald Trump's involvement in the US Capitol riot.

In a video addressing members of the Nebraska GOP State Central Committee, Sasse urged the party to accept critics of the former President and remain true to conservatism as the party's future.

"Let's be clear: The anger in this state party has never been about me violating principle or abandoning conservative policy -- I'm one of the most conservative voters in the Senate -- the anger's always been simply about me not bending the knee to one guy," Sasse said.

Sasse's comments come as the Republican Party at large grapples with warring factions at odds over whether to continue the party in Trump's likeness or forge a new path veering from the former President's legacy.

"January 6th is going to leave a scar," Sasse said, referencing the date of the violent insurrection at the US Capitol, where rioters encouraged by Trump sought to overturn the results of the election. "For 220 years, one of the most beautiful things about America has been our peaceful transfer of power. But what Americans saw three weeks ago was ugly, shameful mob violence to disrupt a constitutionally mandated meeting of Congress to affirm that peaceful transfer of power."

Sasse is showing that his politics are about the weird hatred of "one dude". If he looked at it objectively, he would see that Trump was implementing conservative values, against a strong opposition.

Nobody worships Trump, we respect him because he fights for us.

Exactly right.

Answer: Prostitutes do it for comparatively small amounts of money. Politicians do it for millions. Prostitutes don’t take an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. Politicians do, and they regularly break that oath.

“”’Politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude’”

Unless that one weird dude is me, Ben Sasse.”

You are on my wavelength. You should be very, very afraid. ;-)

Sasse needs to get a room with Paul Ryan.

I disagree. Ryan comes from his libertarian principals and wears them on his sleeve. If Trump had adopted a few of Ryan's principals -- especially with spending -- he really would have been perfect. Sasse just comes at this as an outright Trump-hater and someone who is extremely impressed with themselves and their opinions. Sasse is a legend in his own mind.

“politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude”

That right there tells you that Sasse doesn’t get it. It isn’t worship of Trump, it is what he stood for and fought for, which is something Sasse and a bunch of other spineless Republicans (McConnell, Romney, Graham, etc) will never understand. They are more interested in their careers and not in those they represent.

“Politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude” – Senator Ben Sasse

Senator, this is not about the “worship of one dude.” This is about we Americans finally having a president who listened to our desires and concerns, and did what he promised he would do. Again, Senator Sasse insults the intelligence of his constituents, attempting by subterfuge to reframe the matter as being a cult of personality, when the overarching issue and reason for this resolution of censure is his support of and participation in an unconstitutional impeachment trial.

This is about the U.S. Constitution – and about Senator Sasse clearly ignoring its plain language, on matters of real consequence, and IMO, done simply out of hatred for Donald Trump. Senator Sasse, is in fact the one making this an issue of personality.

If Ben Sasse were, as he so often claims to be, a “real conservative,” then he would not be throwing his hat in the ring with the Democrats, contradicting the plain meaning of the Constitution, as it concerns impeachments; and nor would the senator be violating the First Amendment rights of former President Trump, by claiming that by his 6 January speech he incited an insurrection, which clearly by the legal standard established in the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Brandenburg v. Ohio, he did not.

I'm not sure that Sasse has ever worked in the private sector. Wasn't he the president of a small college in Nebraska when first elected? If so, he likely has been in academia forever.

This right? I'm not from Nebraska.
