DEMING—A New Mexico State Police officer was shot and killed on a stretch of highway east of Deming on Thursday, setting off a miles long chase that appears to have ended in a shootout between officers and the suspect.
The suspect, who was not publicly identified, is dead, according to State Police.
The agency said “several officers” were injured as the incident unfolded. One, a Las Cruces Police Department officer, was taken to a hospital in El Paso and is in stable condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
“There are no words for how heartbreaking it is to lose an officer in the line of duty — especially an officer from such a close community as Lordsburg,” Rep. Candie Sweetser, D-Deming, posted on Twitter. “My prayers and love are with the family and friends of NMSP Officer Darian Jarrott as we mourn this tragic loss.”
State Police confirmed ... that one of their officers had been shot and killed on eastbound Interstate 10 at mile marker 101, in Luna County between Las Cruces and Deming.
In a post on Twitter, State Police said the second scene — where the suspect was shot — occurred about 30 miles away in Las Cruces.
A video posted on Instagram appears to show the scene as it unfolded.
The shaky video starts as a Las Cruces Police Department cruiser plows into a white pickup truck — pushing it down the interstate.
As the vehicles are coming to a stop, the video shows a figure get out of the truck’s driver’s side door, walk around the back and open fire on the police officer in the cruiser.
The officer falls to the ground, then appears to get up and fire back until the suspect falls. Officers from other agencies swarm in.

New Mexico State Police Chief Robert Thornton said 28-year-old Darian Jarrott was the NMSP officer who was shot and killed on Thursday. Officer Jarrott has three young kids and was expecting his fourth child this year.
The suspect accused of killing him is Omar Felix Cueva. Chief Thornton said he has a felony criminal history. He said Cueva was driving on I-10 outside of Deming and was headed to Las Cruces. NMSP believe it may be drug related.
The Las Cruces Police officer who was shot and injured was taken to an El Paso hospital. He was released Thursday evening with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rest in Peace, Trooper Jarrott.
Have driven that stretch of I-10 many times. Always uneventful for me. Men like him kept it that way.
Dope dealer. And Biden has opened the border. Gonna be more of this down there. Sad.
Didn’t the NMSP get the memo? All pedos, gangbangers, drug dealers, and other assorted murderers and lowlifes are to be given a pass from now one. The real enemies are real conservatives.
And probably an illegal too.
Fake News BS to English translation:
The suspect, who was not a MAGA hat wearing, Confederate flag waving, QAnon listening, anti-masking, Trump voting, FluBro (dammit!) will not be identified.
Safe bet
A young father stolen from his family... RIP, Officer Jarrott, and may his family find peace one day.
Yeah, we have to get busy emailing these “news” outlets and asking whether these scumbags are here illegally. Time to turn up the heat.
I support law enforcement and am damn glad that another officer dealt this cop killing maggot due justice.
If this is not clear enough for the lefties out there let me know and I will clarify it for them.
We—all of us—need to step up the fight against drug dealers.
I traveled that road ever week for way over a decade. Lived in Las Cruces for 9 months, then many years in Silver City. All those years I traveled weekly bot directions between Silver City and Las Cruces, and much further West and North.
We loved NM.
Prayers for the Family.
The snewz enamedia will ignore the E-Mail like 99%• of Our elected office holders. (• My House Rep actually returns phone calls & E-Mail. He even answered the phone Himself at 06:30 and knew who I was and why I was calling !)
Blame it on Gov. Grisham too. She’s a leftist bitch re open borders, let criminals go free, etc. despite what she might say.
I had customers in NM, Las Cruces and Farmington.
Been there many times.
Loved the scenery, the people and the food.
To me, it was Arizona without the snoot.
NMSP officer dead, multiple officers injured after shooting in southern New Mexico
I traveled parts of both states for many years. I liked the people in both.
That was from 1972-1986.
There is no better Mexican Food in the World than in CO and NM. Largely a product of Hatch Green Chili (and red).
Please add me to the NM ping list.
Thanks.
