The Tragedy of the Schools: Many parents are losing faith in their closed public schools
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 3, 2021 | Daniel Henninger

Among its multiple alterations, the coronavirus pandemic of 2020-21 may be undermining the role of public schools in the United States, in place since the middle of the 19th century. It is a reassessment that is long overdue.

A relevant anecdote is Ronald Reagan’s famous explanation that he didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left him. Across the country the past year, that has been the experience of parents with children in many of the nation’s public systems—abandoned by schools they’ve supported with their tax dollars.

In Chicago, the nation’s third-largest system is on the brink of a strike, despite pleas from the city’s progressive mayor, Lori Lightfoot, for the teachers to return. Unions are resisting opening in Los Angeles, Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Washington. Michael Mulgrew, head of the teachers union in New York City, says the schools may not open “until September.”

San Francisco’s Board of Education has enough time on its hands to vote 6-1 to cancel the names of 44 Americans from their public schools. On Wednesday, the city sued its own school board for failing to get the schools open.

Though teaching modes vary by state, what data exist suggests in-person teaching at public schools is below 25%, while it’s about 60% at private schools, which have largely reopened.

Had they been aware, they’d have lost faith long long before that.

Lost faith in closed public schools?

I lost faith in public schools when they were open.

This is not a bad thing. Our current school system is detrimental to the health of our nation.

Had they been aware? They didn’t do their homework over the years and didn’t investigate who they were voting for on school board and state elections. You get what the majority votes for.

Kinda too late. They should have remembered the, “Play the Lotto, support your schools,” daze( 1980(. Slipped around the time of the Dept of Ed, or maybe dumping prayer in the schools back in1962( Engel vs Vitale)?

In my state the parents were far more outraged over the possible cancellation of high school sports than they were over the cancellation of classes.

It’s pathetic to see how people who live on the left side of the bell curve operate.

If you want a revolt, tell all the kids in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades who do not intend to go to college to apply for a GED. When a kid gets his/her GED they are graduated and the public school no longer gets the tax money for that student. Starve the beast. Imagine how the schools and teachers will react when they lose half their class sizes for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 calendar years.

If only so-called conservatives would discover that schoolboards exist in every county of America, they might make a connection that attending schoolboard meetings COULD change how public schools are run. Show up. Make demands. Vote out leftist schoolboard members

But that would require stopping kitchen remodels, stop watching football or baseball and stop worshiping Mammon.

Wow! I just left a formula to take back your public schools from leftists. Sorry. Go back to sleep, knuckleheads.

Let’s sell all the schools and drop the property taxes including the voter approved extras. It shouldn’t cost 20k per year for a kid to sit on his bed
A few hours a day.

“Vote out leftist schoolboard members”

OK, dave. Since school boards are public votes, how do you plan to so simply vote out the liberals??

The tragedy is people think schools are there to educate their children. Keep ‘em closed. Families should start homeschooling co-ops and private schools. Starve the beast, starve the government, starve the unions, starve the teachers. Good teachers are free to quit and hire themselves privately.

Indeed. They have conditioned the kids into a new normal. 2 full years without “socialization skills”. It’s going to be hard to come back from this. And like I said above, all the 10th, 11th and 12th grade kids who do not intend to go to college should just get their GED and be done with this nonsense. Then for sure enrollment rates will plummet for the next few years, possibly create a “new normal” where 16 year old kids (who they want to let vote) will just quit participating in the system, and the tax dollars allocated to the school districts based on enrollment will be cut accordingly.
