Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny sentenced to prison

Russian dissident Alexei Navalny was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in a penal colony after a Moscow court found him guilty of disobeying the terms of his probation over the 2014 money laundering case.

In the Tuesday ruling, however, the court also took into account the time Navalny had spent under house arrest, meaning that the Kremlin critic would spend only two years and eight months behind bars.

Navalny rejected the claims of violating parole and slammed the process as an attempt to silence him.

During the hearing, Navalny said his trial was aimed at making people afraid. He blamed the charges against him on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"This is how it works — they imprison one man, as a means to intimidate millions of people," Navalny said.

Following the court's decision, DW's correspondent Emily Sherwin shared a video of Russian police preparing for protests in Moscow.

"First arrests being reported at Manezhnaya Square — the spot where Navalny’s team announced spontaneous protests against his prison sentence," she wrote on Twitter... The opposition leader labeled Putin as "Vladimir, the underpants poisoner" during the hearing. According to Navalny's research into his own poisoning, a "hit squad" deployed by the country's main intelligence agency FSB tried to kill him by putting a Novichok nerve agent on his underwear. Navalny fell ill after boarding a flight in Siberia. He was then hospitalized in Russia and eventually flown to Germany for treatment.

"We have proven that Putin committed this attempted murder," he said on Tuesday...

It’s just what the left tried to do with General Flynn.

Would probably compromise too much intelligence, but it’d be interesting if Russia showed the world evidence of the ties to Western intelligence that everybody knows he has.

And before you come at me, I’ll insert the disclaimer that, yes, Putin sucks. But the Russians like these tough guy leaders and he’s by far not the worst they’ve had.

Yep.

Nancy and Chuckie drool at the idea of this kind of power.

They are almost there.

Yes its ironic that General Flynn was accused of Russian collusion while Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is routinely accused of being CIA funded.

“It’s just what the left tried to do with General Flynn.”

I was thinking the same regarding our dissidents. Flynn as you cite, but what of the people who were invited into the Capitol Building on Jan 6th - they’re now looking at 20 years. I suspect they now wish they lived under Putin, with his much higher tolerance of dissent.

You forgot to add your sarcasm tag.

“In Russia thousands are arrested for peacefully protesting”

Let’s see who spends more time in jail, the hundreds of Trump supporters who were peacefully following the orders of the Capitol Police, when they were waved through the US Capital, or the Russians trying to violently overthrow Putin.

After explaining the logic behind their equation and showing his work, I’m convinced we have more than 600 million guns in America, more than double what is reported by the media.

*************************************************************

I respectfully disagree with you that Pelosi et al are “almost there”. The foregoing quote is from Bearing Arms Magazine. If 600 million guns were in the hands of Russians, Putin would be six feet under. This might partially explain the fence the Democrats have put around THEIR Capitol Buildings.

.....”it’d be interesting if Russia showed the world evidence of the ties to Western intelligence that everybody knows he has”......

Even if Russia did that Navalny would say it’s all a set up.

1-Not really, we've had months of protests in the US, most without permits, police just stood around.

2-Its almost impossible for the opposition to get a permit to protest in Russia

"In practice, however, this right is severely limited both de jure and de facto by federal legislation, an array of regional and local regulations, and an opaque system of bureaucracy. As IMR’s March report on protest trends noted: “Today, there exists a web of criminal and administrative laws that punish participation in unsanctioned protests while also making it incredibly difficult for organizers to receive a permit for protests.”

Have you seen the surveillance video of his executive chief Ashurkov meeting with the MI6 station chief Ford, FSB leaked?
That would be more than 3 years. The topics discussed would be hard to swallow even for the most brain-dead Navalny’s supporters.
Lefty media redacted Navalny’s speech in court so make it sound noble. On full video he is hysterical.
