The San Francisco Human Rights Commission will begin forming the city's African American Reparations Advisory Committee to come up with a plan to pay reparations to residents who are descendants of slaves, HRC officials said Monday.
The commission is now accepting applications for the task force, which will be made up of 15 residents.
The creation of the task force is the result of efforts by Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton and the San Francisco branch of the NAACP.
Last year, Walton introduced legislation calling for reparations for African-American residents, possibly using income from the city's hotel and marijuana taxes, to compensate Black people whose ancestors not only provided free labor for hundreds of years through slavery in the U.S., but also suffered injustices during the Jim Crow era.
"The damage caused by slavery and free labor for hundreds of years in the United States still has a major negative impact on the Black community. Being stolen from your own culture and not allowed to reproduce and receive an education, has led to systemic negative impacts to this day for Black people, even here in San Francisco," Walton said Monday in a statement.
"The only way we can right the wrongs of being prevented from building generational wealth and achieving equity, is by true reparations for Black people here in our own city," he said.
After meeting for six months, the committee will be tasked with reporting its progress to the Board of Supervisors, the mayor and the Human Rights Commission. After 24 months, the committee would submit its final plan for the reparations.

California was admitted to the union as a free state. Such slavery as existed within California as a US state was done without legal authority. Why should 21st century CA residents be taxed to pay reparations to people who were never slaves, in a state that didn’t allow slavery?

Since there was no United States yet, technically speaking, 1776 to 1865 doesn’t equate to hundreds of years.
I think from their prospective, there’s tons of money just ‘flooding-in’ and you just need to step out and scoop up money for some folks who feel bad about their position in life....which actually goes back five generations ago.
The negative about this....you are basically talking about a couple thousand dollars, which you could spend in a three-day weekend at Vegas or on a really great month-long binge on drugs.
We can only hope this works.
California was never a slave state, so it has no descendants of California slaves.
All reparations will go to black folk who travel to California to get a cut of the loot from Golden State taxpayers.

I not even white and I do not think this crap will pass, and even if it did, try explaining it to the Hispanics, Asians and others that will have to pay for them, for its the taxpayers that will be hit with it.

I think these folks are kinda screwed even in California, there are more mexicans in Cali than there are blacks, and in my dealings with mexicans from most of my life they will pretty much say “screw that, I’m not paying for it.”
But it is California, so they might just do it without asking.
