Amid the coronavirus crisis, Americans are abandoning cash almost entirely in favor of “tap and go” transactions....Experts say that the growing trend of contactless payments is here to stay even when the pandemic is over.
Not wanting to touch anything is having a dramatic impact on consumer habits. Americans are abandoning cash almost entirely in favor of "tap and go" transactions and have finally embraced contactless and digital payment methods after years of reluctance.
The U.S. Mint has pleaded with the public to use coins again, but the opportunities to do so are fewer and farther between.
Since the start of the pandemic, more retailers have moved to e-commerce, including allowing shoppers to pay online and pick up curbside, avoiding even the touch-card readers, according to the National Retail Federation. Overall, 67% of retailers now accept some form of no-touch payment.
As of January, all subways and buses in New York City enabled riders to tap a contactless bank card or their mobile wallet at turnstiles to pay fares which runs America's largest urban transit network.
or the first time, consumers are going out of their way to find retailers that offer contactless payment options, according to Cyndie Martini, CEO of Member Access Processing and that has caused the rate of adoption to "leap frog," she said.

not me. i’m all cash.
If cash is done away with, physical money, you are at the mercy of government to buy and sell.
Do not let go of cash.
They want all transactions to be traceable.
BS. I use cash every day. The commies are trying to move us away from cash.
That's where it's at. The revenooers don't like folding money - unless it's them using it in their corrupt backroom deals.
Bingo. I have said this many times. If you cannot see your money, the government owns you.
Yeah-— these cnbc idiots have NO idea what is really going on. People in the South, alone have operated over the last 12 months with minimal electronic transactions- except maybe gasoline. From long experience— ready cash is kept on hand, and supports an underground economy (no, not meth, but liquor, and... weed). Cash only.
Cash is KING in the land of plastic point and click, the Fed wants us all to be controlled in this fashion. See: Mark Levin— “the criminalization of cash”— by the banks who spy on and report cash transactions. Levin is livid about it— answer is John Wick like-— gold coin.
Which is the reason they are trying to get rid of it.
This has been the goal for decades. No “cash only” work and No “off the books” jobs. No buying anything with just cash.
Purpose is so the IRS will have a copy of every transaction you will ever make.

I can touch anything I choose.

In India, they tried this about 4 years ago. An immediate, overnight shift to digital payments. Even the smallest vegetable seller and his cart needed to have digital payment capabilities. It was funded, BTW, by the USAID
Don’t want to give up your cash? Well, old notes simply were declared “no longer money” with a limited time to exchange them for new notes. It was done because, you know, only drug dealers and terrorists use cash.
Know what? If they made the dollar worth something again folks would use coins again as fractions of the dollar. But when a dollar has the purchasing power of one cent why?
Well, the government already declared me a terrorist since I supported Trump.....might as well fit the part.....cash only for me...
Heh, libs would LOVE to see no cash. Then, with a flick of a few keys, they can make sure that you have no funds.
Heck, even a publik skool teechur can figure that out.
Me too. Walked out of a couple restaurants that didn’t take cash. Another reason I use cash, especially in restaurants, is that I’m sure the wait staff get their tip.
I’m all cash also. We have started using our $100 bills as much as possible to pay for things, and will keep lower denominations. Just in case the “system” wants to confiscate $100 bills, and you get in trouble trying to turn in large amounts. That day is coming.
Not only are your transactions traceable, but they can screen and control your transactions. Remember Holder’s Operation Choke Point .... want to buy that gun ... no way.
I’ve also noticed that online banking has become much more complicated and intrusive
Both of my (regional) banks now require an access code sent to a smartphone via text message to log into their websites. PayPal has done something similar. I can spend money at eBay etc. with no problems, but to transfer money FROM my bank into my PayPal account, they too require an access code sent to a smartphone by text message... But they say my phone number is invalid, so I can’t put money into the account.
I’m not going to spend hours on hold with them trying to convince them to let me transfer money into my account, so my business with both eBay and PayPal is coming to an end. Inconvenient for me, but an actual loss for them because I always kept several hundred dollars in my PayPal account in case something I really want comes up for auction.
I’m a cash guy too. Other than PayPal I only use credit cards for an occasional online purchase and only write a few checks a year.
My greatest fear is that very soon they WILL outlaw cash. Everyone will be required to have a couple of Covid ‘vaccine’ shots a year, and have ‘the mark of the beast’ to even go to the grocery store.
