GM plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035, ending production of its cars, trucks and SUVs with diesel- and gasoline-powered engines.
The company’s “aspirations” are part of a larger plan for the Detroit automaker to be carbon neutral by 2040 in its global products and operations.
GM’s plan comes a day after President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders that prioritize climate change. For several years, GM has touted a guiding “triple zero vision,” including a future with zero emissions through electric vehicles, but it never announced a timeframe. The other goals include zero congestion and zero crashes through advanced safety technologies and self-driving vehicles.
“For General Motors, our most significant carbon impact comes from tailpipe emissions of the vehicles that we sell – in our case, it’s 75 percent,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in message on LinkedIn. “That is why it is so important that we accelerate toward a future in which every vehicle we sell is a zero-emissions vehicle.”
Electric vehicles, including battery-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles, are currently a niche segment of the global automotive industry, estimated at less than 5% of sales by analysts. EVs are more costly to produce than those with internal combustion engines due to the battery and fuel cells that power the vehicles. But automotive executives and analysts are bullish that EVs, led by stricter regulations to reduce carbon emissions, are the future for the automotive industry.

“And what powers the electric car...”
Why, you just plug it in, silly goose.
Save the environment!

What’s not to like about coal powered cars? That is a really modern idea.
“ Where are they gonna find the 1.21 gigawatts to charge those things?”
That’s the beauty of it. You just plug them into the wall outlet. What could be more environmentally friendly?

That'll be a problem for us with vehicles that runs on the internal combustion engine. Where will we be able to find gas?
Meanwhile...Fiat Chrysler just figured out how to stick Hellcat engines in a few more models.
How many amps will it take to run a really loud speaker system broadcasting the ‘proper’ exhaust sound?
just imagine the spaghetti of extension cords spread across new car lots to keep them charged while waiting for purchase...
Thinking you see the future via technology driven trends is one thing. Thinking current PC trends will matter or hold is another.
Hate to break it to everyone, but all the companies are going full electric and fairly quick. Ford will probably announce next, VW’s well on the way. US/Europe are probably going to be well beyond the Japanese on this.
This is like climate change claims. Who will remember GM’s virtue signalling in 2035? I am open to electric cars, IF I want one. And IF there is a way I can drive 1K miles per day on highway and byway, and get quick charges that take no more than 15 minutes. There is a lot of infrastructure we need for an all electric car world.
Dateline: February 10, 2036. General Motors declares Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. Impeached ex-prez bidet to blame.
That kind of time might be acceptable to hobbyists and people who have plenty of leisure time, and those who only drive a few miles a day. But, for business, that much down time for transportation will be a profit killer. Regardless of the subsidies.
At some point in the future (hopefully after I’m safely underground) all roads will be restricted to autonomous electric vehicles. If you want to drive your own gas powered car then you’ll have to go to a closed track and pay a high price for the privilege.
In the meantime, if fewer and fewer people know how to shift from themselves, maybe there will be some bargains among classic cars with 3 pedals?

Everything is going electric. I bought a battery powered chain saw. Will never go back to my tempermental Stihl. Best tool I have ever bought.
I have yet to drive an electric car but people I know have and they love them.

They are coming out with new batteries that charge fully in less than 5 minutes. This will be a game changer.
I have a dishwasher that takes three hours to do a load of dishes.
Like almost everyone else I wash most of my dishes by hand - which takes about 10 times more water than using a dishwasher.
The designers are not working to supply me with a product I want they’re working for white liberal elite billionaires who live on the water and don’t want oceans to rise an inch...
Same with the cars. China will continue to pollute and we’ll have cars we hate and appliances that don’t achieve the purpose we want OR the one they want.
The future?
We’ll buy cars from other countries and GM and will have their elites buy off the DC elites and outlaw cars we want to drive. And if YOU OBJECT YOU’LL BE SENT OFF TO A RE-EDUCATION CAMP. Is that gonna be fun or what? Livin’ in the hellhole...
MOVE OVER NORTH KOREA AND OTHER COMMIE HELLHOLES - THE US ‘ELITES’ LIKE THE JIB OF YOUR SAIL..
There is a guy who takes a Tesla and guts it, then converts it to a gas engine,
Real popular on youtube.
In Cuba....they put forklift engines in their old cars.
