In pre-market trading Gamestop was up over $100.
As the markets are about to open GME is now down about $15.
It has been exciting to watch the hedge funds squirm as they had to cover their short positions.

Those that sold during the frenzied downturn lost their money to the hedge fund. No one should mourn that the hedge funds got badly burned on this play with the exception of New York Mets fans.

The broker doesn't really have the 10 shares of the stock in inventory. They pretend to and sell the 10 shares for you and give you the equivalent in cash. It is a loan with short call time limit.
The fraud/crime is there in step 1.
