Oceans warmed steadily over 12,000 years: study

Paris (AFP) - Earth's oceans have been warming consistently throughout the last 12,000 years, according to research published Wednesday that authors said showed clearly humanity's profound effect on the climate.

Researchers in the US and China reassessed sea temperature models and found that they usually represented seasonal temperature variations rather than the annual average.

Adjusting for these seasonal discrepancies, they found that sea temperatures have in fact risen more or less in lock step with global air temperatures over the last 12,000 years.

The newly adjusted sea temperature models suggested that oceans are currently roughly as warm as they were during the last interglacial period, around 125,000 years ago.

Oceans have absorbed as much as 90 percent of the excess heat produced by industrial activity since the mid-17th century, as well as around quarter of all carbon pollution.

Warming seas pose a challenge for marine species, as evidenced by several pieces of recent research showing how creatures struggle to adapt to higher temperatures.

They can also increase the severity of tropical storms and the flooding and devastation these phenomena can bring.

Writing in a linked comment article, Jennifer Hertzberg, from Texas A&M University's International Ocean Discovery Program, said Wednesday's study was "a major step forward" for climate research.

She said her colleague's method of correcting seasonal temperature bias in historic reconstruction "can now be applied to other temperature records on different timescales".

I guess that’s what 12,000 years of driving SUVs does........

As oceans have warmed over the last 12,000 years they have released more carbon dioxide.

Has Algore apologized yet? What he will probably do is demand we ramp up our coal-fired power plants to produce the electricity needed to freeze a whole bunch of ice cubes that we can then dump in the oceans to cool them back down. The idiot.

Got to be from methane emitted by newly domesticated cattle. That’s it! Blame the cows and those dastardly human herders.

Look at global temperatures over the past several million years. Temperatures rise to a peak and rapidly plunge, leading to the ice ages. Carbon dioxide is a lagging indicator, not a leading one, of this pattern.

This article seems to be a mashup of facts interspersed with nonsense.

Factoid (whether true or not): oceans are currently roughly as warm as they were during the last interglacial period, around 125,000 years ago

Nonsense (that which does not follow from the factoid): showed clearly humanity's profound effect on the climate.

...... You mean the oceans have been gradually warming since the Ice Age??? ..... Or have they been gradually returning to Normal since the Ice Age?

The first sentence says it all. Profound human effect for 12000 years? So the oceans have been warming a bit ever since the end of the last Ice Age. Whadduhsuhprise.

They're freakin' MODELS- IOW, guesses. No one was recording ocean temperatures 125,000 years ago!

The newly adjusted sea temperature models suggested that oceans are currently roughly as warm as they were during the last interglacial period, around 125,000 years ago.

And then something happens to drive the world back into another ice age. My theory is that heat inside the earth's interior, caused mostly by tidal forces, builds up over thousands of years until it is released in climaxing volcanic activity.

This rapid increase in thermal outpouring heats the earth's oceans, increasing atmosphere moisture and sunlight reflecting SO2 levels greatly increases to a degree where ever increasing snow and ice fields exponentially accelerate the process.

Once a certain amount of the earth's surface is covered in snow and ice, the climate stabilizes for 100,000 years, until some other cyclic phenomenon causes the earth to enter another 12k warm period.

I know Paris had the first university, but 12,000 years ago? WHO was taking the temperature readings?

That is one heck of an INTERPOLATION.
