One week, it’s fires; the next, it’s feet upon feet of snow.
In the middle of January, high winds and dry conditions sparked wildfires throughout California.
Now, an atmospheric river is taking aim at the state with a huge amount of water. In the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe region, forecasters are calling for between three and six feet of snow by the end of this week.
This kind of dramatic shift from fire to fire hose is something California is already used to. But the tick-tock between extremes - or what climate researcher Daniel Swain calls “precipitation whiplash” - will only become more exaggerated as the climate crisis plays out, now and in the near future.
This week, a series of winter storms will drop feet of snow across Tahoe. But in the coming years, precipitation at the shores of Lake Tahoe will continue to shift from snow to almost entirely rain.
The ski resorts are already investing in climate adaptation, like more efficient snowmaking systems, wind and solar power, and expanded summertime recreation. But the loss of skiing looms.
“What is Tahoe without skiing?” Fougères said.
In the meantime, I suppose we all better go skiing while snow is still falling.

what climate researcher Daniel Swain calls “precipitation whiplash” can only be believed after years and years of out of control drug use, a lobotomy helps too
Not even a remarkably different winter.
Just a bit slow on the start.
We had a massive upcycle from 2016-2019 and now we’re in a downtrend...perfectly normal.
The snow in Tahoe has always been like this, at least for the last 50 years that I’ve been paying attention.
The climate hoax continues unabated. The dire effects of global warming are always just a few years down the road.
This so-called “precipitation whiplash” has been going on in California for a long, long time.
Sadly, young people today a) haven’t any recollection of the years prior to their birth and b) are pre-programmed to believe the article’s assertions.
Yeah, forecasters are saying we’ll be getting 10-20 inches of snow here in the foothills of Reno starting tonight through Friday morning. Uh, okay. So, anyone else why Edgar Rich Burroughs did’t write “Tarzan of the Tundra”? Perphaps become warmer weather is more conducive to life as we know it? Maybe? Earth cycles are, well, earth cycles. Pose these to your ecowanker acquaintances:
1. Define the “correct” temperature range for the planet.
2. Define the “correct” humidity range for the planet.
3. Define the “correct” mean sea level for the planet.
4. Define the “correct” amount of precipitation for the planet.
5. Define the “correct” makeup of the atmosphere.
6. Define the “correct” amount of sea ice at the N/S poles.
7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.
Crickets..............
An in a post later down the list, simply send swain these:
This kind of moronic theory mongering can only be made worse by equally moronic forest management.
They updated the story and reduced the rainfall predictions a bit. But still a LOT of rain coming...
Santa Cruz Mountains: 6-8 inches
Mountains of Monterey and San Benito counties: 7-10 inches.
Big Sur: 6-8 inches with isolated locations in southwest facing coastal slopes could see more than 10 inches
The climate is changing. I don’t think that can be denied.
I also don’t think there is anything we can do about it.
Two weeks Ulaan Bator (Mongolia) hit -57C, the coldest temperature measured there in the last 60 years. Everywhere across North Asia - from Beijing to Seoul, were hit with record low temperatures.
Amazing it’s going to snow. And it gets hot in Nebraska in June July and August
What a pathetic article. It’s about half a foot of rain falling from Monterey to Santa Rosa and SIX FEET of snow around Tahoe, but immediately goes full catastrophe: “...the loss of skiing looms. ‘What is Tahoe without skiing?’ Fougères said.”
They just can’t help themselves. You have to wonder about writers who regurgitate this crap probably upon command of their editors: “Brown, your weather story is ok, but you need to spice it up. Throw in some Global Climate Catastrophe blurbs to scare the rubes.” Then you have to wonder about the integrity of the writers who say “Whatever you say, Boss! Yes Boss, yes boss!! I’m shaking it here, boss. I’m shaking it.”
If it wasn’t for climate change the city I grew up in would still be under a mile of ice.
That picture doesn’t even do it justice, they are so over the top.
I wonder if you get a Leftist payoff for coming up with the most outlandish prediction yet.
My daughter wanted to DVR “Snowpiercer”
I made it through 20 seconds of it
‘The Deniers caused the earth to warm too much, and then the scientists took it too far and turned the Earth into an icebox’

What a pant load, eh? Science can do some interesting things, but like everything else, it has been fouled by politics. It seems to me that “scientists” are too hamstrung by expectations of their benefactors.
There are winter storm and flood warnings from Northern California to southern California for the next few days.
