WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.
House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

They need 17 GOP senators to sign onto conviction in order to make it stick. I don’t think that is going to happen.
1) President Trump did not “incite insurrection”. 2) He is no longer president. 3) Pelosi is queen of the moonbats...
It is a growning number only because these pussy Republicans do not have principles and they only care about being reelected.
I think the pubbies have gotten texts or calls from voters saying you do this ,YOU ARE DEAD TO ME....
Because they know we are pissed and will Primary their asses.
I think there’s a developing idea that this whole thing is absurd, based on the fact that Trump is no longer in office. And that since the whole purpose of impeachment is to remove the offending office holder from his/her position, it’s a useless exercise since Trump is in fact no longer president.
1. As more details emerge, the less culpable the President seems.
2. Related to Point #1, everyone is now calmed down from the initial stampede encouraged by the Enemedia.
3. Polling data and the threat of a possible exodus of GOP voters probably has them looking to cover their asses.
4. The Chief Justice, no fan of The Donald, has apparently signaled that he doesn't want preside over such a farce--especially when it is constitutionally dubious.
Neither party really wants a trial because Trump’s lawyers will present evidence of election fraud.
Good.
It’s an unconstitutional (don’t care what Mittens says) act that’s pure political kabuki theater that the Dems will use to gaslight and impose their version of history while ignoring their support of true insurrection and seditious acts in Washington, Chicago and New York.
I thought other wings of INGSOC media told me that a growing number of Republicans were looking at convicting Trump in such an impeachment trial.
House and Senate Republicans know that President Donald Trump had 95% GOP voter support, and that if they don't "fight" for him, they'll get even less support during these midterms than what they will get for abandoning Trump and bowing to their Communist Chinese masters.
Nothing Trump did incited anything. Let Alone the constitutionality of An impeachment trial for someone no longer in office.
I agree. I also believe most GOP voters do not want the trial to proceed and they certainly do not want to see GOP senators voting for impeachment. This is why I hope they have the trial. It will reveal 'rats as the partisan cutthroats they are, and it will isolate the RINOS like Delecto, et al.
They’ve done their damage. Now it’s time to convince their gullible voters to vote for them again.
Oh ya. They are not comfortable with this. Oh well. They’re still in a corner I’m guessing
And they have been hearing from their constituents. I know I have contacted mine a few times. I think they understand that we aren’t fooled by the FAKE “insurrection” any more that we are fooled by the FAKE election or the new FAKE president. I think they have gotten the message loud and clear that their voters do not want them to convict.
I dont either.
But I would file a court case if I were Trump in regards to the unconstitutional impeachment in the HOR.
He was denied due process. That would put Roberts in a bind.
With Democrats making the rules, don’t count on President Trump being able to present his evidence. They don’t care about due process. This will be a soviet style show trial.
A few of them must be getting wind that there are a LOT of folks like me that wouldn’t vote GOP again if that’s all that was on the ticket.
Trying to win back their abused lovers.
