Psaki: Biden still backs the filibuster
Washington Examiner ^ | JANUARY 22, 2021 | NAOMI LIM

Posted on 01/22/2021 1:12:39 PM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

President Biden isn't backing a Democratic-led effort to get rid of the Senate's filibuster procedure as Senate leadership struggles to agree on a power-sharing deal.

"He has spoken to this many times. His position has not changed," Psaki told reporters Friday.

Biden, a 36-year senator who sat in the chamber in both the majority and minority, has reiterated his support for the filibuster. Removing the rule would mean Biden could pass his more controversial bills with the Democratic 50-seat majority plus Vice President Kamala Harris, rather than a supermajority of 60.

Biden did tell the New York Times last summer his stance against nixing the filibuster could shift.

“It’s going to depend on how obstreperous they become,” he said, referring to Republicans.

This week, Psaki has sidestepped the question as liberal Democrats push for its removal, stalling Senate negotiations between Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell over an organizing resolution.

Psaki topped her briefing Friday by unveiling Biden's response to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol building attack: He'll ask newly confirmed Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines to conduct "a comprehensive threat assessment," and he'll add a domestic terrorism team to his White House National Security Council.

She also revealed Biden had spoken with Gen. Daniel Hokanson, head of the National Guard, and "asked him to reach out if there was anything that he ever needed." National Guard members resting in the Capitol had been temporarily moved to a nearby parking garage. They were later allowed back in the building, a place where they've been having breaks since being sent to Washington, D.C., for Biden's inauguration.

There obviously were backroom deals with the GOPe invertebrates, who offered their support for Asterisk46 in exchange for his pledge (LOL) to keep the filibuster for now.

I don’t know why. Unlike Harry Reid employing the “nuclear option” which was used against Dems when Reps took over, that can’t happen now.

Republicans are slated to sit and watch, and most of them are happy about it. I just answered my own question. Why change the rules when you don’t need to.

I don't think so, the GOP has been the DNC's bitch for quite a while, and will do what they are told.

To me this as signal that Schumer is about to eliminate the filibuster rule and Pedo Joe's statement is nothing more than political posturing.

Good question, but rest assured his handlers do.

Shall we start a pool on when Slow Joe leaves office and makes room for "Heels Up" Harris?

My Guess is November 10, 2022. Yeah, I think he will last that long.

What this “lady” says doesn’t mean anything, when he changes his mind it will be because he has “evolved” on the issue and has “matured” in his thinking.

Is there anything more hypocritical in American politics than politicians in the Senate with the filibuster? They literally and shamelessly flip-flop every couple of years depending on whether their party controls the Senate or not.

“We need the filibuster, it’s vital!” Two years later win the majority. “Abolish the filibuster, it’s obstructionist!” Four years later lose the Senate. “The filibuster encourages compromise, the Senate is the cooling saucer of American federal politics!” Two years later win the Senate back. “The filibuster was installed by slave lover James Calhoun, the Founders never intended for it to exist!”

All from the same exact individual. It’s nuts. And it’s not just one, it’s like 90-95 of them. Aside from a few exceptions such as Joe Manchin or consistent filibuster defender John McCain when he was alive, they all just shuffle their position and talking points on it every few years and apparently have amnesia about what they said sometimes just one year ago.

Schumer has already said he wants to eliminate it.

Biden’s statement is posturing with no real say in the matter.

The filibuster helps Democrats more anyhow so they never really wanted to scrap it. They just stayed ambiguous on it to try to leverage concessions from our idiots that can’t negotiate.

Biden is ask his Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines:
<><> to conduct "a comprehensive threat assessment,"
<><> and will add a "domestic terrorism team" to his National Security Council.

Watta coincidence.......conservatives are organizing "a comprehensive threat assessment" of BLM and Antifa.

We are also forming a "domestic terrorism team' to gauge Democrat threats to conservatives.

Truly doubtful these were his exact words; knowing
full well his inability to speak coherently.
