Transportation Secretary nominee Pete Buttigieg suggested raising the federal gas tax in order to fund infrastructure initiatives during his confirmation hearing Thursday before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
Republican Florida Sen. Rick Scott asked the former South Bend mayor if he would favor a federal gas tax increase to pay for the Highway Trust Fund. The fund is mostly financed by revenue from federal gas taxes but has become less financially solvent in recent years, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.
“Well, I think all options need to be on the table,” Buttigieg responded. “As you know, the gas tax has not been increased since 1993, and it’s never been pegged to inflation. And it’s one of the reasons why the current state of the Highway Trust Fund is that there’s more going out than coming in.”

The average driver gallon per year is roughly 700 gallons.
Depending on how much the gov. adds on for tax, a .30 cent rise in taxes would mean an extra $210 per person per year added to their gasoline bill
multiply that by roughly 250 million licensed drivers or so, = an additional $52,500,000,000 for the government
How much will they raise taxes? They will do it in the name of ‘saving the planet’ to justify the rise- and the sheeple will oooh and awwww over how conscientious the new administration and ilk are, and gladly pay the increase-
Total and complete zero sympathy. I saw that clip, too. Union higher ups aren’t happy, but you know they were all in for ChinaJoe. Suck it!
I'm thinking of cutting back from politics and looking forward to my Wife's Birthday gift of Roland V-Drums TD 27KV that should arrive any day. I've had Roland V-Drums before, but not this level. V-Drums are silent if used with headphones so I won't bother her while she watches Real Housewives of Who Gives a Shit downstairs. Haha. Plus you can now Bluetooth from my Receiver to the V-Drum command module without all the connections and follow different songs. Sorry for the rant.
Yeah, and corruption, greed, financial mismanagement, and pocket lining have nothing to do with it, right?
EVs don’t use gas.
GA does have an annual EV road tax. $200. Knowing where it’s going, most drivers are willing to pay it (clear, direct, understandable, used as expected).
Maybe he might want to learn a bit about thejob , establish himself as the face of transportation instead of shooting his mouth off about taxes.
You know, i think this is one branch of federal govt that should be lopped off along with the dept of education
Sure raise it because the Massholes and the rest of the big city clowns need to zip around in mass transit.
Comment on inflation
New Class 8 trucks (semis) have a 12% Federal Excise Tax added. My friend purchased a new truck at 151,800.00 PLUS the $18216.00 tax.
Include the Federal Excise Tax on tires, etc
18 Tires X 50.76 = 913.68 per unit
Etc.
The amount of taxes collected is staggering.
Maybe
But politicians divert a huge percentage of gas tax to non-road feel-good money -losing mass transit.
2020 was not the Dems’ first cheating rodeo.
Well, from what I saw, he (Buttgag) did say that those people will need to find new UNION jobs. So in one breath, he’s telling them to just deal with it, and in the next, he wants their loyalty.
I guess that is part of the whole Unity theme, right?
It's the peter principle, so to speak.
Indeed. With him, the jokes just write themselves!
Let me know if that helps with your depression. I'm looking for a pick-me-up myself and have my eye on grabbing a Gibson SJ-200 guitar. I'm having a hard time justifying spending $3k on yet another guitar, though.
All options except cutting spending and closing government agencies.
To help my mood, I just got a Quilter pocket amp at 45 watts. Size of a standard stompbox. Running it into a cab with a 12” JBL. YIKES! L O U D! In a good way. Plus I can plug headphones into it and run a signal to it for something to play along with.📢🎸🎼
Just checked them out. Sweet!
