Schumer says Pelosi to deliver Trump impeachment article Monday, triggering trial amid standoff with McConnell
Fox News ^ | 01/22/2021 | Tyler Olson

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Friday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is sending the article of impeachment against former President Trump to the Senate on Monday, paving the way for a trial.

The House of Representatives this month voted to impeach Trump for the second time in his presidency for "incitement of insurrection" after a mob of his supporters besieged the Capitol on Jan. 6 in a failed attempt to stop the certification of then-President-elect Joe Biden's electoral college win.

"I've spoken to Speaker Pelosi who informed me that the article will be delivered to the Senate on Monday," Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor Friday.

Pelosi confirmed her plan in a separate statement.

"We are respectful of the Senate’s constitutional power over the trial and always attentive to the fairness of the process, noting that the former president will have had the same amount of time to prepare for trial as our Managers," Pelosi said. "Our Managers are ready to begin to make their case to 100 Senate jurors through the trial process."

Schumer has been discussing how to organize the Senate and special rules for the upcoming impeachment trial with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

No agreement has been reached on either front. If one is not on impeachment rules before Monday, then the standing Senate impeachment rules will go into effect, forcing the Senate to convene every day at 1 p.m., excluding Sundays, to consider the impeachment "until final judgment shall be rendered."

McConnell suggested a set of pre-trial procedures on Thursday that would delay the event by a few weeks, but the decision by Pelosi, D-Calif., instead sends the Senate potentially careening on a collision course with a full trial next week.

The goal is to prevent him from running again in 2024.

I don’t know how that can even be done.

Yes.

Aides to Schumer: Sir, you may have to face Mitch McConnell himself on this.

Schumer: I’ll try really hard to contain my anxiety over that.

To prevent Trump from running again and to intimidate the 75+ million who voted for reelection and, as always, to set up political ads for GOP candidates in 2022 and 2024.

Make no mistake they want Trump and family totally annihilated from the planet and history.

Simply convicting him of impeachment (he is out office, do they know that) doesn’t disqualify from holding the office of President again.

You can't impeach a private citizen.

Of course if they try to anyway, President Trump has no redress. The courts will say he has "no standing".

It's funny how the courts work on the "standing" issue. If a farmer in Texas wants to expand his irrigation ditch, an environmental group half a continent away in Maine will have "standing" to sue the farmer. If a federal election was stolen from you because of widespread demonstrable fraud, then you have "no standing".

It's a very curious way to run a "free country".

If Mitch had ball$, integrity or any fight in him, he’d find a way to block and hold up every single Biden appointment and legislation until this nonsense is dropped. But Mitch doesn’t care. Bye GOP.

They will argue voting to convict has nothing to do with whether he can still be removed or not. They are perverse, insane, deranged. They didn’t even go forward with an impeachment vote, let alone a trial, against Nixon.

It should be made crystal clear that Republican voting to convict would be committing political suicide.

Roberts will probably not preside.

Article I says: "The Senate shall have the sole power to try all impeachments. When sitting for that purpose, they shall be on oath or affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside

Donald Trump is not the President of the United States. Therefore, the conflict inherent in having the Vice President preside is eliminated, I believe Vice President Harris will be in the chair.

67 votes is a high barrier. The Republican caucus MUST KNOW that if they provide the necessary 17 votes to convict that it will be the end for them - but it is very worrying that they are showing signs of thinking we can go back to Jeb and Mitt.

And you just KNOW that if Trump could (miraculously) be convicted WITHOUT 17 Republican votes (he can't), that McConnell et al would be very, very relieved when 49 Democrats + only 2 Republicans voted to ban him from office in the future. THAT sentence, following conviction by 67 votes, only requires 51.

Should be fun to see Trump bring the FIRE to these bastards.
Let the world see the evidence Roberts tried to keep hidden.

Any impeachment has the same legal standing as having Kamala Harris, who is not a Natural Born Citizen, serve as vice president. It also has the same legal standing as diktats of those who were not elected but stole votes by fraud. In other words, they’re not legal at all.

The Senate trial should take months. Nothing else should be done until it is complete. All Biden appointments can wait.

Where is that person spouting off her experts in Con Law who called me a Clown for saying this was going to happen.

Um...

Yeah....

Once again, Belknap.

Although, a good deal of this may be chess play trying to get Trump to back down. I just don’t know. I do know Mitch hates Trump and his China Masters would like Trump taken out .

“they have the proof the election was stolen”

Hadn’t thought of that. It’s certainly a valid part of proving Trump’s innocence.

What a great forum for presenting evidence of the stolen election. Can’t imagine the Democrats wanting that.

"standoff with McConnell", yeah, good one.

That was my first thought as well. The "standoff" is nothing more than an agreed-upon piece of Kabuki theater meant for the [assumed stupid] masses. Schumer and McCONnell met a couple days ago to plan a theatrical "standoff" and which day they agreed upon for the start of the fake impeachment. Both of them should go burn in HELL for eternity.

“To impeach Trump so he can’t run for the office again.”

He’s already impeached - to keep him from running again they need to convict him, which means they need 17 turncoat Republicans.

“The Senate trial should take months.”

And by that time usurper Biden and gang will have dug the Republic a pit it cannot get out of.
