Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has confirmed the government is looking at scrapping some EU labour laws now it is no longer bound by the bloc's rules.

Measures under consideration include relaxing the working time directive which enshrines a 48-hour week.

..."So even by just following that we are way above the average European standard and I want to maintain that. I think we can be a high-wage, high-employment economy, a very successful economy, and that's what we should be aiming for."

So that’a where most of Asia got its 48-hour work week from. Absolutely used to hate 6 or 5 1/2 day work weeks, topped with American style vacation leave (er none). At least some forward-looking companies give 13th and 14th month pay...

depends on where. in France and Italy they DO (and who can blame them?)

In Spain, Poland, and much of the UK, it’s not most - just those with kids.

At least some forward-looking companies withheld one-twelfth or one_sixth of your pay from every oaycheck during the year to finally allow you to have it at the end of the year if you're still working there and if the company didn't spend it on something else.

Not allowed in the Philippines, Singapore or the Netherlands... it’s the law. Hell, in the Netherlands, we got 14th month pay.

I still see it as the employee's pay earned during the year but held until the end. If your labor produces enough to pay you $30 per hour for 12 months you get $25 per hour for 14 months. I would rather be paid during the year and just get a Jelly of the Month Club membership for Christmas.

It sounds like a bonus program implemented at an old job. If you did your job adequately- no more and no less, you would get a bonus. I argued against it and said bonuses should be for exceptional work or maybe profit sharing rather than just doing your job. I lost.
