I don’t think she was criticized.
Why would she criticize Melania when she did the exact same thing when she greeted Laura Bush with a gift when they arrived at the White House on their inauguration day?
I think she looked awkward, which doesn’t make sense. She should have accepted the gift like Laura did and pose for the pictures. The box looked like it came from Tiffany, so not a shabby gift.
It was a gift from Tiffany’s, and Michelle appeared to scorn or make fun of it.

She WAS mocked, by Michelle, on a TV talk show tour. She enjoyed making fun of the act by Melania.
I like to imagine that the beautiful Tiffany picture frame Melania gave the Obamas held a copy of Barry’s real birth certificate.
