Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is out of the leadership post he’s held for nearly four decades. On Jan. 13, 2021, state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch was elected the new speaker of the Illinois House.
On January 11, Madigan announced he was suspending his campaign for the position he’s held for nearly four decades after falling short of receiving the 60 votes needed to secure another term, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.
“As I have said many times in the past, I have always put the best interest of the House Democratic Caucus and our members first,” the statement continued. “The House Democratic Caucus can work to find someone, other than me, to get 60 votes for Speaker.”
Fifty-one House Democrats voted for Madigan to remain in the powerful position he’s held for almost four decades in their first round of voting in a closed caucus meeting on January 10.
Known as “The Velvet Hammer” for his quiet but iron-fisted control of the speaker’s gavel, the powerful Southwest Side Democrat has held the reins in the state House for much of the past 37 years, serving as speaker for all but two years since 1983. He was first elected to the House in 1971.

Illinois has declined significantly due to Madigan's dominance in the state legislature.
Madigan’s associates are being investigated for a bribery scheme by the Feds.
**************
In which case he has nothing to worry about. Being a Dem the feds will give him a pass.
I want to see Madigan behind bars until his death.
Replacing one speaker with another - SO? Is it any improvement for Illinois? Or is it simply re-arranging the chairs in the Titanic?
Watch Illinois’ laws swing even farther left under the new Speaker.
Madigan's associates are being investigated for a bribery scheme by the Feds.
PING!
When does he go to prison?
“As I have said many times in the past, I have always put the best interest of the House Democratic Caucus and our members first,”
Party before country, screw the unwashed deplorable peasants.
Good riddance.
“ I have always put the best interest of the House Democratic Caucus and our members first,”
He sure as hell didn’t put the average Illinoisans first. That’s for damned sure.

Anybody with more than two terms needs to be removed. At all levels.
And we think the new guy is going to be any better, why? The name alone gives me reason to believe it’ll just be business as usual with a bent towards #BLM.
This line right here says it all, both for him and Pelosi as well.
His "replacement" is hand-picked Madigan flunky. This state is no better off with Madigan out. Madigan is still exercising his power through his hand-picked flunky.
(I live in Hellinois, I follow this crap closely here.)
Nothing will change in that cesspool in Springfield. It’s past the point of no return. Illinois used to be a great place to live and work.
Illinois needs to secede from Chicagoland.
The new guy has been a gofer for the criminal Madigan who by the way will still be pulling the strings.
New guy will be worse. He has to get his in a hurry.
New Speaker has a black progress caucus agenda — Reparations, No Bond Bail, Restorative Justice and taxes for social justice. In many ways, he is actually worse than Madigan. The Illinois legislature just passed the New York style no bond bail. Unclear if governor Jelly Belly Pritzker will sign it.
So, if anything, a bad speaker has been replaced by an even worse one!
“Illinois has declined significantly due to Madigan’s dominance in the state legislature.”
Illinois had some problems before Madigan, but he sank it. The guy is a punk; he is Doyle Lonnegan without the limp.
