Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume told "The Story" Wednesday night that America is more divided right now than at any point in his life, adding that even the period of strife in the late 1960s over the Vietnam War "wasn't as bad as this."
"This is as bad as it's ever gotten [except] perhaps [during] the Civil War," Hume told host Martha MacCallum. "So the challenge for leaders at a time like this is [to] attempt to tamp us down, how we find places to agree, because this is poisonous to our country."
Hume credited President Trump for making a video statement Wednesday evening in which the president said he "unequivocally" condemned last week's riot at the U.S. Capitol. However, the analyst wondered whether the message had come too late.
He added that, while Trump bears responsibility for spreading false claims about election irregularities, President-elect Joe Biden didn't help the situation by suggesting last week that police treated the rioters lightly because the crowd was mostly White.
"There are a lot of people in this country who believe that we are a nation of systemic racism," Hume said. "But there are a great many who believe we are not. It's a point of deep division in this country, so why he [Biden] would choose on that occasion to feed that is a good question.
"He has the job now of trying to unify things. One way you could do it is if you could call off the impeachment dogs, but it may be too late for that."

Understand what you are saying, but this show has hardly ended. It is perhaps the end of Act 1.
Only the future knows, but the division is absolutely real and I see sign after sign that it will only get worse.
The future might hold massive political doxing and people forced from their jobs, not having credit, not aloud to speak, not being aloud to leave their homes—all the hallmarks of a disaster.
“And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?”
aloud = allowed. More coffee, please!
“However, the analyst wondered whether the [President’s] message had come too late...[Biden]could call off the impeachment dogs, but it may be too late for that.”
Hume has an irritating way of distancing himself from the criticism he gasses out from his porch rocker. And apparently it’s nothing too thoughtful or original either. He’s an A-team wise elder, detached, sublime, oracular. “Maybe too late this, maybe too late that.” Insight you could get from a magic 8 ball.
Wife, Mom, and I unregistered to vote. After 60 days, will register to vote as I, Hell maybe D (if you can't beat them, join them).
F the GOP....they left our guy to die alone. At least the Democrats fight for each other.
I think we’d be in a hot war if there were some sort of geographical line. It would be an interesting map right now for sure. Two coasts, Northern border States and a bunch of circles around big cities, even in the deep red States.
Cause of lying media pricks like you.
Unite through extermination?
“I took my name and my mom’s name off the voter rolls after 45 years of NEVER missing an election local ones too!! I have completely checked out I AM DONE!!!”
I did the same. I have always voted but no more! Until & unless there is a complete overhaul of the elections system (Voter I.D. required along with a fingerprint on each ballot) I will never vote or take part in this sham of a system again. Why bother?
