Technically you are right. Alcee Hastings is living proof. He was impeached from his position as a federal Judge, but the Senate did not take a separate vote to invoke the penalty of lifelong ban of holding government office.

If I understood Professor Dershowitz correctly in an interview he gave a day or two ago any Senate “conviction” that might occur after he leaves office would have no legal weight whatsoever and would,in fact,be blatantly unconstitutional.

Actually, the Articles of Impeachment against Hastings did not include prohibition from holding an office in the future. They all end with the phrase “Wherefore, Judge Alcee L. Hastings is guilty of an impeachable offense warranting removal from office.”

The Article of Impeachment against Trump does include that additional penalty: “Donald John Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.”

The specific punishment is included with the Article of Impeachment, so any conviction on the Article includes the punishment.
