I read something long ago that said a president doesn’t have to be in office to be impeached or convicted. They would do so to prevent Trump from running again and possibly to strip him of any post-presidential benefits.

That’s why they’re doing it.....and further... to warn anyone else who thinks of running against the swamp. They will destroy them.
One of Ulysses Grant’s cabinet members was impeached by the House for corruption even though the guy resigned first. The Senate didn’t get a two-thirds vote to convict him — mainly because many of the senators thought it was a waste of time.
