In the span of a week, from late December to early January, temperatures high in the atmosphere above the Arctic jumped by 100 degrees Fahrenheit. While this may sound alarming, it's a natural phenomenon that happens every couple of years, but experts say human-caused climate change may be making these events more likely.
The remarkable event is called a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), and it involves the temperatures 50,000 to 100,000 feet above the ground. It disrupts the typical winter climate pattern in the Arctic stratosphere famously known as the polar vortex, and typically leads to more extreme winter weather in parts of the United States.
Even for an Arctic that is warming at three times the pace of the rest of the globe due to climate change — a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification — this is an extreme departure from normal. The result was record-breaking low sea-ice extent near the Siberian coast.
In what may seem paradoxical, as global warming has intensified in recent years, the number of big Northeast snowstorms has increased. In fact, many of the biggest snowstorms in New York City history, like the January blizzard of 2016, have happened in the past two decades.
It should be noted that this trend in bigger snowstorms is likely also due to other factors related to a warmer climate like warmer ocean temperatures, more available moisture and more intense storms due to extra energy in the system.

It should be noted that we don’t even have six inches of snow on the ground - when we usually have a foot and a half to two and a half feet at this point in January...

Funny, when I was doing my grad technical work, my experiments actually had to match my models, if not, my advisor sent me back to get it right. Oh, forgot, my stuff had to actually work.

It’s been beautiful here in Mexifornia. But that’s normal. We can have a January that’s 80 degrees every day. Then some years It can rain cats and dogs and then have mudslides and 60 ft. of snow in the Sierra Nevada. But you have uneducated dupes out there and some haven’t lived long enough to see patterns that think the world is coming to an end. Watermelons love these people. The real danger is COMMUNISM!

We’re ready as we are every winter because one thing I’ve learned living in the NE is that you never know what’s going to happen.
A year that starts off with a bang sometimes fizzles. Likewise, it can start out great, like this year did, and pound us later.
Just be ready for it all and you have no issues.
We were SUPPOSED to receive 4 to 8 inches of snow here in East Tennessee last night and this morning...but it has been RAIN right from square one. Perhaps the surface of the earth has been warmed just a tad by an expansion of Hell preparing to receive America’s out of control political class in the very near future...both democrats and republicans.
The truth is one of the tenants and predictions of the Global Warming theory is the Stratosphere will cool.
Apparently CO2 should hold heat in the Troposphere below that the Stratosphere above will cool as a result.
The lower stratosphere temperatures have been flat since the early 90’s
Meanwhile since 2008 (When they sent up new state of the art satellites capable of accurately measuring it) the mid and upper stratosphere temperatures have been increasing.
Even all the other lies they tell us were somehow true, this alone dis-proves the Mann made Global Warming hypothesis.
In real science it’s called falsifiability.
