Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday said that he doesn’t believe he has the “unilateral authority” to decide between competing slates of electors.
“It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,” Pence said in a statement released just before a joint session of Congress began.
As president of the Senate, Pence is presiding over the session. The purpose of the session is to count electoral votes.
Under the Electoral College system, voters choose electors. Those electors then vote, almost always for the candidate that received the most ballots in their state. Congress meets in the January after an election to tally the votes.
Typically a rote affair, this session has taken on heightened significance after seven states sent two certificates to Washington, one for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and one for President Donald Trump. Biden won the states but Trump has said he was cheated.
Trump and some Republicans argue that Pence has the “exclusive authority” to reject electoral votes for Biden and choose the ones for Trump. A lawsuit asking a court to support that view was rejected by a district judge. An appeal was dismissed, though the plaintiffs earlier Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to intervene.
“The congress votes to accept the elector votes.
Then, the VP comes along and rejects those elector votes.”
I believe you have the order wrong.
There is no reason to even accept or consider. He sends it to contingency without debate because there is no reason for debate.
I agree there is no reason to send it to debate if the vp is not going to accept them. But it is the senate and house that send it to debate, not the vp.
I am not arguing whether the vp has that power or not. That’s a separate issue.
I am somewhat of a dim bulb.
So does biden occupy that basement .... btw I do not care for lamestream media or democrats ....
U.S. Code 3, 15 refers to the V.P. counting “lawful” votes and just because a crooked Governor and SOS certify a vote that in itself does not make it “lawful” when there is overwhelming evidence that the vote was fraudulent.
2016 did not have several states with fraud being actively investigated and all evidence supporting the fraud...and one state (PA) asking to reject the electoral votes because the fraud is so overwhelming.
But hey, if you want to keep comparing apples to oranges, you’re the second freeper I’ve replied to today that can’t seem to keep his fruits straight.
No, he is not.
And if he and others were really so uncertain, he should have rejected them and then let it play out in court so that there would be precedent set for an old law.
Instead, he helped the DNC to institutionalize voter fraud that will ensure we never have a free and fair election in this country again.
Judas Pence is a traitor.
I don’t know what his actual state of salvation is, but he is no Christian in my book.
He can go straight to hell.
Mike Pence suit
“This guy folded like a cheap suit when the whole gay pizza wedding thing happened.”
He’s really betting on the Deep State to pacify everyone so he may travel freely after this. The ‘Good Christian Man’.
Pure Swamp water.
Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner! When the constitution becomes a roadmap to hell, it's time to drop kick it out the window. I want no part of a document that requires a stiff like Pence to ignore election fraud x 5 (at least) states.
And a new worm emerges from his hole.
unilateral ...
But if sufficient cause is seen to say ‘wait a minute ‘...
Sorry Mr. Franklin we couldn’t keep it
Truer words never spoken - plain to anyone who has actually read the Constitution. When it is commanded that you "shall" do things, that isn't optional. When it doesn't assign you authority or power, you don't have it.
The Republican party hates deplorables even more than the Democrats do.
The party of Murkowski, Ryan and Romney.
Eff the Republican party. They are the new Whigs.
I never really trusted the guy.
