The Illinois Legislature has a chance to save lives by reducing gun violence. But it must act quickly.
The local firearms toll is staggering. In Chicago alone, 769 people were killed in 2020, mostly by guns. More than 4,000 were shot. Just over this past holiday weekend, 30 were shot and six were killed. Gun violence also has increased in cities around the state.
Illinois does not have to meekly accept such horrific mayhem. Editorials
Legislation called the Block Illegal Ownership bill would plug legal loopholes through which guns flow to the criminals who turn streets into killing zones. It passed in the House in 2020 but stalled in the Senate as the Legislature took fewer votes during the pandemic.
The Senate, where the vote will be close, needs to pass the bill by Jan. 13 during its lame duck session or the bill will go back to square one as a new General Assembly is sworn in. If that happens, the state will lose its chance to act quickly to make it harder for dangerous people to get guns and harm others, including children, while giving law-abiding citizens access to guns.

Close the gun show loophole that doesn’t exist now!!!
“..—the usual with not a word about the , uh, “cultural disparity” involving the victims of “gun violence”-—..”
Exactly. Using Shitcago as an example is asinine.
And it’s ALWAYS the gun’s fault. No one is ever held accountable for their actions anymore. Lawless.
issue purchase vouchers for anyone who needs a good quality firearm. offer free firearms training classes and shooting sports again in all high schools. offer free firearms training classes to the general public too. eliminate all of the illegal firearms ‘control’ laws and stop paying people at the taxpayers’ expense to limit or deprive American citizens’ of our constitutionally-recognized inalienable rights
of course! we all know that those ugly mean firearms all leap off the table and chase innocent victims down the hallway to blow them all to Hell.
Why don’t they just pass a law against shooting people?
—most of us are familiar with this—the pie chart about halfway down tells the story—
You might call this editorial a scatter gun blast hoping for anything to stick. Every anti-gun scheme and dream for the last 58 years is on the table.
One thing...”Last year, Chicago police seized 11,280 illegal guns and made 7,236 gun arrests.”
And how many of these arrests led to prison time? Is Illinois building prisons to house the gun criminals of the future?
As for buying out of state, will Illinois have their own border patrol checks for every vehicle on every state line crossing, even the back roads? It is a violation of the 1968 GCL to buy handguns over the state line.
As for “Point of sale background checks”, will this also work on back alley or kitchen table sales for cash?
Fingerprinting again? Tulsa and OKC did this for years and finally dropped it as fingerprinting gun buyers never solved even one crime.
Again, they are just throwing everything against a wall hoping something will stick.
And so it begins. See my tagline....
Car accidents solved, outlaw cars
Airplane crashes solved, outlaw airplanes...........
Gun deaths are down in Australia?
Violence with other deadly weapons are totally up.
It’s not a problem where the tool is involved, its a problem with the people
“Legislation called the Block Illegal Ownership bill would plug legal loopholes through which guns flow to the criminals who turn streets into killing zones.”
The bill proposes to require FOID card holders to submit fingerprints to get a FOID card, require all private sales to be recorded and allow Illinois Police to seize firearms from anyone whose FOID has been revoked. How any of this would reduce killings by thugs is beyond me or how any of this constitutes some kind of ‘loop hole’.
In Chincongo, 94.2% of murders are committed by a black or a hispanic. I think I just invented the word Chicongo btw.

Illinois prisons are already overcrowded. Addressing the real problem would mean more inmates and more prisons and good luck finding a democrat politician that will attach his name onto that kind of legislation. So they have to blame shift to remain employed as a democrat politician.
Bury your guns for 8 years and take up fishing for a hobby, nothing left to stop them now.
Yep, Just like the UK outlawing knives now.
Do a FR keyword search of “Chicongo.”
Which of the murders in Chicago, in 2020 would these “new laws” have prevented?
Have you tried banning plastic straws ?
... I just invented the word Chicongo..
