Put GOP before Trump: Mitch McConnell plans speech today pleading with Republicans to save their party and NOT get behind President

Donald Trump's extraordinary crusade to overturn the presidential election will come to a head on Wednesday as Congress meets to certify Joe Biden's Electoral College victory at a joint session led by Vice President Mike Pence.

The typically routine proceeding will be anything but, as a group of 13 rogue Republican senators led by Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley plan to file objections when the alphabetical vote roll-call reaches the battleground state of Arizona.

The longshot effort is all but certain to fail, defeated by bipartisan majorities in Congress prepared to accept Biden's 306 to 232 electoral victory over Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to make a last-ditch effort to dissuade members of his party from following through with their doomed plot when he delivers a speech early in the day.

Sources familiar with McConnell's plans told Axios his speech will center around his fear that the objections will tear his party apart by forcing Republicans to choose between upholding democracy and alienating a hugely influential GOP figure in Trump.

Meanwhile Trump has placed his hopes on Pence, furiously claiming that the vice president could single-handedly overturn the election results during Wednesday's proceedings - and denying a report that Pence had told him that wasn't possible.

Mitch would rather be the king of a party with no voters than a prince of a party that might actually win sometimes.

How exactly is not backing free and fair elections saving the party? Why does he keep getting the votes to lead the party for crying out loud.

Wow... Talk about tone deaf. Republicans just keep digging deeper and deeper. Trump was the ONLY reason I considered occasionally identifying as an R in recent years.
No more and I’m registering as an INDY for now.

Indeed. But I do get concerned people are too stuck on Trump vs. the country/Constitution. I see more “Trump” than I see “USA”.

Per one poll 90% of the GOP believe election was stolen. Mitch needs to open his eyes.

Why do you call them cowards?

They are highly effective left-wing change agents. It’s MUCH HARDER to pretend all the time, while the Democrats can just let it all hang out.

No, McConnell, you have already done so. We need a new Constitutional Party that will caucus with what will be left of the GOP to form a coalition majority in 2022.

Mitch has moved to a position of being nominally relevant, and lacking much in the way of power. But he is pleading to let the swamp rebound to at least restore his cash flow from China.

It reminds me of the scene in Braveheart, where the outnumbered Scot army is leaving, and the nobles are pleading with them to stay so they can go broker a deal for themselves with the English.

In other words don't stand up and fight! Fecklessness, duplicity and treachery from the Scum of the earth country club C of C Republican elites as opposed to the take no prisoners no holds barred ruthlessness of wealthy lib gentries. These people need to pay taxes and they need to pay a lot more. That is the only way you can cure fecklessness from the GOP elite and make the Dem elite understand that if they champion socialism they will end up paying for it.

The horse is out of the barn. The distinction between the GOP establishment and on-the-ground conservatives has been drawn. See ya Mitch.

Without Trump, there IS no party.

Without The Almighty there is no America . . . Our President was acknowledging to the world the importance of God and country, faith and life. The sheep and the goats, wheat and the chaff have self-separated before our very eyes.

“Is Mitch blind to the many many Trump supporters marching in DC today?”

Mitch controls the levers of power. He doesn’t care. There could be fifty million show up, would not change the deep state intent.

What the next break point will be is when they start on gun control. Then a choice will have to be made. Surrender them or use them to fight.

This isn't about party, this is about integrity in elections.
And 13 senators aren't rogue, they're raising legitimate concerns.
McConnell seeks to deny us that redress.
